I like the idea of a beater Wrangler the best, but holy crap they're expensive for a lot of miles. Why do people pay that? Cause they think they're cool?

It's just not practical for going to the gym and doctors appts - combined I average ~4/week. For example, I had an 8am ortho appt this morning and then went to work. Via bus, I would have had to leave my house probably by 7 and wouldn't have gotten to work until 10. Instead, I drove to both and it took me 1.5 hours less. Then, I'm going to drive from work to the gym to get my swole on. Again, generally a PITA via bus.

You will never get me to bike on city roads. You can thank constant bitching about car drivers by all you bikers for that.

So P-car for these somewhat rare days and suck its shortcomings the eff up?

I like the Cherokee idea, Ranger or even an old 22re Toyota 4WD for when it snows and call it a day.

I like this idea, but good luck finding one that's not 50% rust at this point. Even my 03 is a big ole pile of rust.

Re: What car should I buy? For old time's sake... - Apoc - 10-10-2014

We get one snow storm a year that drops 3" and melts a day later.

I don't think a truck or Cherokee has the footprint or gas mileage I'm looking for. That said, I really like the Wrangler idea and they have shit MPG.

Why wouldn't I just buy this and be done with it?

Because you're an adult now.

Oh. Right.

LS 4 door integra? :dunno:

I considered those for a while

I'm inclined to agree with both of you. Even the 22re Toyota "truck" (not Tacoma) are still fantastic little vehicles. Alas, like Taylor said, good luck finding one not rusted to hell or has received the virgin mary treatment..

Along the same lines my father in law picked up a Chevy Sonic for trips/running around town since gas was killing him in his truck when he'd come visit. Gets an easy 40+, maybe a hair smaller than the Fit. Think he ended up with the LT w/ the 1.whatever turbo. I actually liked it better than my Fit.

Or keeping the PNW hippies happy, doesn't Toyota do a Prius-C or whatever their little hatch version is?

Because they're all piles of shit at this point. An Integra wouldn't be a bad choice... They held up a bit better (mostly due to having more affluent owners, I think).

But serious P-Car. Most people would be jelly to HAVE to drive that somewhat regularly. And it's not like it is made of unobtainium...

Eh, I get that... but at some point it has to graduate to collector car status. At what value do you stop driving it a couple times a week because the risk is too great? I'm not talking about garaging it permanently, but a day will come when the cost to replace is higher than makes sense for a commuter. There's also the insurance bit of it being listed as a "pleasure" vehicle. I don't want to get in a situation where replacement cost is $50k and they tell me to GFY because I was commuting in it. And ZOMG it's already got a nail punch in one of the bumpers!

It's a lot like a motorcycle. In the summer, there's nothing I'd rather drive. In the winter, it's kinda terrible.

Re: What car should I buy? For old time's sake... - Mike - 10-11-2014

Then I'd buy something strictly beater, not 8-12k. More like 2-5.

Re: What car should I buy? For old time's sake... - WRXtranceformed - 10-11-2014

Eh I've had three Toyota trucks, two old school pickups and one tundra. Both pickups had rust and it didn't hurt either one to beat around in. It's not like he's buying a show truck or rock crawling in it. If the frame is fine then I wouldn't worry about it.

I like Mike's idea, buy a small beater truck for the winter and you would be way happier than a Wrangler that has no utility in the city whatsoever (other than the smallish footprint)

I really, really want a short wheel base.

I'd rock a saabaru.

Well that opened you up to more than 2 doors but I didn't realize how cheap those have gotten. I wouldn't fault you for that decision.

What about this one? Memory heated front AND rear leather seats would get you to the cubicle in style and comfort. And of course turbo.

The 2006+ look cooler but they will break your budget in that area it seems, even with high mileage

Re: What car should I buy? For old time's sake... - Apoc - 10-12-2014

Not a bad idea, but it's 15" longer than the Saabaru... and aren't the guts Chrysler or some such?

To clarify, I'm okay with two doors but also okay with four... or five. I was more saying I didn't need a four door.

Re: What car should I buy? For old time's sake... - Mike - 10-13-2014

I wouldn't touch a Saab that wasn't a Subaru. Not even with your ten foot pole.
