They are still without power (in Maplewood, NJ area) and have gone to Massachusetts to stay with some family for now. Apparently power may be out for a while longer.

This whole gas thing is getting out of hand. Lines are miles long and you hear stories from everyone who goes about fights and other types of confrontations. I really hope they get those refineries and pumps working soon, we're just a couple days away from chaos.

What's the bigger issue, stations not having gas to sell, or not being able to sell what they have for lack of power to run the pumps?

Methinks it's a combo of both.

My boss has "evacuated" to somewhere in Massachusetts through this weekend.

It's a combo of both plus other factors. Once a gas station does have power, lines form immediately.

Gives you a little glimpse of TEOTWAWKI. It was the same thing during Katrina down here when the Spice (gas) wasn't flowing. After 3 days, lines a mile long, fights at gas stations, cars stranded on the road out of gas.

i was living in Atlanta at the time that hit and it was eye opening. i've never seen panic spread through a mass of people like it did the day word got out that "there won't be any gas left." i didn't think people would make that big a deal about it, and went to fill my car up that night since it was down to a 1/4 tank....sat in line for hours. couldn't believe it.

i've seen this around the internet before...it was taken at a pump down the road from me at the time. people were at that station filling up.

the cost to get the gas in, to run the shop, etc is expensive right now. the price is passed down. I was in the presidential brief when he asked about the gas prices and all the analysts said that it was pretty good considering some gas stations are running on their own generators and so are some of the terminals/ports.

they are also paying OT to the truck drivers to keep delivering fuel... and the safety proticols have been waved on the trucks so when you see electric companies rolling north... they havent slept in a while.

There were some incidences of price gouging during the BP spill. A couple of NC / SC gas stations got in trouble and I think were fined.

Got an email from our CEO yesterday... every employee was given up to $1k to spend on supplies to send north for NY/NJ residents affected by Sandy. I went to the Target next to our office this morning, ran into two coworkers there, and we collectively filled six shopping carts with "stuff" that's needed. Corporate sent us all a shopping list to work by, so things like batteries/blankets/socks/underwear/fleeces were what we looked for.

Everything is being loaded onto 18-wheelers today and will be driven up tonight. Pretty cool.

Well, people were being told it was about to be resolved, by instituting this so late, people are going to freak out and think they need to get more. Not to mention all it takes is switching your license plates anyway. Additionally, what if i go one day and am told they will be getting premium tomorrow, guess i'm SOL.
