Its funny. When they went HE for top load Washers, they took out the agitator in the middle. Well then people complained that they didn't wash as well. When I went to buy a new washer and dryer recently, low and behold the agitators are back. Its definitely a matter of preference, and I'm kinda like JayRay on this one. My Washer and Dryer were like $500 each. They aren't quite bottom of the barrel, they don't have all the bells and whistles either. I need them to wash and dry clothes for 1 adult and 1 Hannah. That's all. Don't over complicate that shit. Also, I had front load units at my town house cause that's all we could use in the space allocated, and it was a freakin joy to leave those suckers when I sold that place. Happy with my old school top load washer, and my run of the mill dryer.

My wife had the same complaint about lack of agitators and front loaders, which is why we ended up with the Maytags. They were one of the only good brands when we shopped that had top loaders with agitators and they are really impressive. SO much quieter than my old Craigslist special GEs

I've bought a bunch of new appliances in the last 5 years because of the two houses and kitchen reno we did in the new house.
First house we had, was a new build with GE Profile kitchen appliances and we bought stacked LG washer/dryer. The GE Profile microwave fried a circuit board that was replaced under warrant but the oven (gas), dishwasher, and fridge were all pretty good. The LG washer/dryer gave us zero issues.
In new house I went GE Profile for microwave, dishwasher, split oven, induction range, and hood. Bought a Samsung fridge with fancy cool door. I'm kinda not impressed with the durability/build quality of some of the sliders and trim of the Samsung fridge. I'll probably have to replace some of those parts sooner than later.
The house came with Kenmore he washer/dryer. Not impressed at all with the washer. Seems like it doesn't drain well or something because it has too much water left in it afterwards and sometimes it will smell if we haven't washed it for awhile. Might need to have a tech come look at it. Dryer is fine, but a dryer seems kinda hard to eff up so whatever.
Overall I think the GE stuff has been the best for us. Wifey got GE stuff in her house after she did a reno job for her first house. No ragrets.

IIRC it had something to do with mold / funk growing a lot easier around the front gaskets in front loaders and it's nearly impossible to stay on top of. I guess I should preface that by saying that I realized that our dryer is a front loader because that doesn't really have any downsides. It was my understanding that the washing machine is where it matters.

From all the reading I did, front loaders were far more efficient in both water use and actually cleaning your clothes. The "gasket stink" is easily fixed by leaving the door open between washes. *supposedly*

I generally gravitate towards mid level appliances and don’t see the need to replace unless they break (or there is a major financial incentive to upgrade). I have an unfinished basement so I don’t really care what the washer / dryer look like. All the newer smart features have always seemed really unnecessary to me.

I just buy whatever is reasonably priced on craigslist. I think the last time I bought a washer it was only 20 bucks and worked perfectly fine. I gave it to my friend when I moved into my house and he's still using it.
Fuck paying hundreds for new appliances that probably aren't any more reliable than the craigslist specials.

So as far as efficiency, I think that front loaders have top loaders beat. I'm not particularly hard on clothes, and the stuff Hannah is hard on, I pretreat anyway. But I prefer top loaders. I had a front loader, I kept the door open when not in use, I didn't have mold, but dog hair built up in the gasket. A rag once every 2 weeks did the trick. But I still prefer a top load.

leave your door open after washes, and run an empty load with some washing machine cleaner in it every few months and no problem with mold/funk in a front loader. if water isnt draining, your drain pump is going tits up.

Front load, leaving the door open is a must and resolves 95% of the funk issue. I'm undecided if people are saying they don't like non agitated top load. Lately I thought I heard those were the best. I don't mine front load except for big things but every load I ever did, I would select the extra water feature to fill the drum more. I still like stuff being submerged though. Like dog beds and our bedding. Just seem to absorb the amount of water a front load uses and I can't imagine it cleaning that effectively after that. I hate agitators though. Maybe because our apartment has shitty units but the agitators destroy our blankets and wrinkle the crap out of my jeans and pants. I can't wait to get a better washer and dryer. I'd go back to front load before getting an agitator again though...at least I think. Hopefully one of you does a scientific study on which is actually best by then.

After years of poopooing the idea for a lot of reasons, I finally caved to my wife's request to get one. Found our lady via word-of-mouth recommendation from one of her colleagues. We keep the house relatively clean and our nanny takes good care of the kid areas, but I've resigned myself to the fact that I/we aren't that good at keeping it spic'n'span and it's just not what we want to do with what free time we have.
Man the first clean was a 'deep clean' but I swear the house was a different color afterwards. There are just so many nooks and crannies (trim, hard to reach areas, shit like that) that were neglected.
My girl Yessica's gonna be coming around on the reg.
