this is my understanding as well. i thought you had to walk the bike across, legally.

this is where it gets hazy. riding too close to the right and the driver may not see you or make a bad judgement as to whether they can pass the cyclist safely. i side with the safety of the cyclist in this case and say that riding more toward the middle (not in the middle) in low-light situations may yield a safer situation based on the visibility of the rider.
i also used the left-side of the left lane on Rt 7 last night when i went to grab my truck from the dealer because it was safer (no on-coming traffic, frequent intersections with right-turning lanes, it is more visible from a driver's perspective, and i eventually would have needed to cross 3 lanes of traffic to make an eventual left-turn a couple miles down rt 7). although the law says stay to the right edge or curb i did not deem that safe enough based on the traffic condition, so i stayed to the left of the left-lane. normally i do stay to the right edge or the right lane though - as do most cyclists i have seen ride (except on rt 7 in tysons corner).

any honest effort not to impede or hold up traffic is fine by me, I know there are situations where a cyclists needs to move out towards the center momentarily and thats never a problem.

i had to get my truck some how and yes, it was scary as f*ck. it was out of necessity.

yeah I'm really only basing my thoughts on middle school and college riding, and I usually stuck to the sidewalks and felt a lot safer that way. I don't know what you guys face up there. :dunno:
