Re: Toyota plans 3.8 million vehicle recal due to driver error - NTIman - 02-10-2010 Its possible, I guess. I do know for a fact that they were looking into RFI as a possible cause to the accelerator issue, and thats coming from the toyota training center in baltimore. Electric power steering is nothing but trouble anyway, and it makes the steering feel like shit. Re: Toyota plans 3.8 million vehicle recal due to driver error - Jake - 02-13-2010 ![]() Happy Valentine's Day! Re: Toyota plans 3.8 million vehicle recal due to driver error - Ole - 02-16-2010 Give me a throttle cable anyday.... Re: Toyota plans 3.8 million vehicle recal due to driver error - ViPER1313 - 02-16-2010 Ole Wrote:Give me a throttle cable anyday.... I'm right there with you - why use servo motors, 5lbs of wiring and fancy computers where a simple cable would suffice? Oh wait, I remember now, it's because the government mandated traction control / stability control be included in all cars starting in 2012, with a gradual phase in starting in 2008 or 2009....... A critical part of that system is to limit engine power, and the cheapest, easiest way to do that is to modulate the throttle (as opposed to retarding ignition.) :vomit: In my mind, automotive engine technology has become entirely too reliant on computers and sensors, making them prone to failure later on and creating a maintenance nightmare. Examples: -Why does a motor need to have 2 or more coolant temperature sensors (my SHO has 2, DSM has 3 IIRC)? Wouldn't it make more sense to use one sensor to feed the engine computer AND the temperature gauge? -Do the benefits of coil on plug ignition outweigh their replacement costs and seemingly early failure rates? A good coil pack can give you most of the spark control, more voltage and a much longer lifespan than COP. Advancement of technology, first uses of the technology will be shitty until it gets perfected in which case itll be better than the technology it replaces. Evo guys with over 600whp actually went back to DSM coil packs because their Coil on Plug had them breaking up in the higher rpms. In another 5 years im sure aftermarket coil on plugs will be MUCH better than any current coil packs. Most technology doesn't hurt you when it goes bad, although I tend to agree. There's a reason why I usually don't buy the first generation of pretty much anything that plugs in or takes gas. Would it be better than the technology that it replaced though if that technology were advanced instead of replaced? Example: I don't think you will ever be able to get the voltage out of a COP setup that you can get out of a coil pack. The 1989 SHO's coil pack gives off a hell of a lot more juice than a 200X Duratech plug coil (the systems can be interchanged quite easily.) People tried the newer setup and found it actually degraded performance. Got up to 90 or so. Pushed on the brake, still full throttle. It's easy to slow the car, no surprise here, brakes feel normal. Jabbed at the brake twice more, now we're talking. Sure enough, no more brake booster. It takes quite a bit more pedal pressure now, and I can see this being an issue for an old person or a 14 yr old girl. I still pretty easily slow down to 35 or so, let it run back up to 90, drag it back down again. I repeat this twice more, no real signs of brake fade, and stopping the car would not be a challenge at all, even downhill. I can smell the brakes now of course, but really, this was just not a big deal. There's PLENTY more brake than engine, and there's enough heat dissipation to handle multiple stops against full throttle. A little better than I expected actually. :dunno: FWIW, I ended up with a '10 Prius a month or so ago and played with it a bit, but it's even less interesting. Fortunately, for whatever reason, Toyota decided that the Prius should kill the throttle when you're on the brake. So this test wasn't even possible. That d-bag in San Diego is a liar. Re: Toyota plans 3.8 million vehicle recal due to driver error - Jeff - 03-17-2010 BLINGMW Wrote:That d-bag in San Diego is a liar. What model year was his Prius? I would imagine a 10 and a 9 would not be a fair comparo after all this shit went down. Maybe he could have a 10 but a change in software could have missed him by a month? Re: Toyota plans 3.8 million vehicle recal due to driver error - BLINGMW - 03-17-2010 Well to be fair I think his was a 2nd gen, not a 3rd. So maybe the 2nd gen doesn't do that, I dunno. Re: Toyota plans 3.8 million vehicle recal due to driver error - Steve85 - 03-17-2010 IIRC, according to Toyota's response and investigation of the incident, his Prius did have that feature. I believe it does require what they termed as "moderate" braking force. According to his story he was jamming on the brakes, according to the vehicle log, they were only tapped lightly a few times. The only explanation, the ghost in the machine is a hacker. Re: Toyota plans 3.8 million vehicle recal due to driver err - HAULN-SS - 04-10-2013 Yeah I heard about this. I was just trying to figure out where there was such a string of only down-hills that they didnt run into at least one long grade to stop them (which are everywhere) Re: Toyota plans 3.8 million vehicle recal due to driver err - D_Eclipse9916 - 04-10-2013 Maengelito Wrote:Its not Prius related but it happened right near JMU: I don't understand no matter the grade how he got to over 100mph without the accelerator sticking.. ... |
