- damnit458 - 08-11-2008 Anybody catch the mens 400m relay? The finish was pretty good, I was actually on my feet cheering them on. Looks like Phelps is through the two toughest events in his quest for 8 gold medals. Glad to see the French swimmers got what they deserved after talking trash  - ScottyB - 08-11-2008 yeah i stayed up to see that. definitely the best competition yet in terms of excitement. Frenchy got owned! - Maengelito - 08-11-2008 that was awesome, stupid surrender monkeys, go USA! - JackoliciousLegs - 08-11-2008 http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/player ... b_hl_l0194 There's the video. Holy hell. - WRXtranceformed - 08-11-2008 US Women's polo team just barely edged out China, that was an exciting game too. This is apparently China's first year in the Olympic sport, so it's pretty impressive they came that close to the gold medal favored US team. - REED - 08-13-2008 So does anyone have any thoughts on the faking of parts of the opening ceremony? I wouldn't normally be shocked to find that a performer lip synced in an event like that, especially for such a young performer, but if it is all true that she was chosen to perform over the actual singer because she wasn't attractive enough - thats pretty shitty. The use of previously recoreded footage of some of the fireworks for the opening ceremony seemed pretty lame as well. - Mike - 08-13-2008 reed - link? and shit... us soccer i didn't have the balls to get up at 5 for it and i'm glad... seeing a red card in the 3rd minute would have infuriated me.

It's a sporting event, not: -China's emergence on the world stage. -The time to pressure China on it's human rights violations / pollution problems. The opening ceremony is entertainment, not a sporting event. I only think it's fair to judge the opening ceremony on it's entertainment value - if you watched it on TV and found it entertaining, job well done by the presenters. If you think that entertainers in the US aren't picked for their looks then go pick up any tabloid in the grocery store. - ScottyB - 08-13-2008 REED Wrote:The use of previously recoreded footage of some of the fireworks for the opening ceremony seemed pretty lame as well. i heard on NPR that the footage of the "footprint" fireworks was computer generated. anyone else hear anything like that? - WRXtranceformed - 08-13-2008 I was just thinking today after looking at the medal tracker, if we used our pro baseball players we'd be a shoe-in for a gold in that sport. Do we not use them because it's in the middle of the 11.95 month long US pro baseball season? EDIT: Or is it because half of our pro players wouldn't pass the doping test? - HAULN-SS - 08-13-2008 I think the players are required to be amateurs. It doesnt matter much anyway, because it's phased out, along with softball after this olympics. - Ginger - 08-13-2008 HAULN-SS Wrote:I think the players are required to be amateurs. They killed that rule a while back - pretty much all of the cyclists competing are paid professionals. - WRXtranceformed - 08-13-2008 Ginger Wrote:HAULN-SS Wrote:I think the players are required to be amateurs. Yep, true for a lot of sports (basketball, volleyball, etc.) I even heard that Australia was paying their team members like $20,000 per medal they earned. - REED - 08-13-2008 yeah i don't thihnk MLB wants take a however long hiatus in the middle of there season. here is a question - isn't there some sort of age requirement for athletes? During the opening ceremony I saw England had like a 14 year old diver? - HAULN-SS - 08-13-2008 I agree that other sports can have paid competitors, but I dont think that was olympic wide, was it? - WRXtranceformed - 08-13-2008 It's supposed to be 16, at least for gymnastics anyway. That's been the big stink about China lying about the age of its gymnasts by forging documents, etc. I mean give me a break, have you seen those girls? They all look like they're 10....perfect RJ age. - Maengelito - 08-13-2008 REED Wrote:yeah i don't thihnk MLB wants take a however long hiatus in the middle of there season. to me, thats still retarded. The NHL took a break during the winter olympics to allow their players to compete. I think baseball's issue has to do with legitimizing the "World Baseball Classic" or whatever the F its called now which I think is more of a business venture from Steinbrenner's camp. Also, I'm not sure the US would do very well if it allowed MLBers to play seeing as how most of them are from central america and surrounding islands. - Maengelito - 08-14-2008 hmmm, I'm guessing this dude did not get the gold http://www.comcast.net/sports/weightlif ... ow/view/1/ |
