Could be. My commute now is like 15 minutes, but roads in this area aren't known for being the cleanest. If you're commuting like 5 or 10 minutes with all city driving, I guess it would be easier to keep your paint pristine.

Bump to the top.... It hasnt even been a month and Das Boost is already giving me headache (yeah, everyone that said "I told you so" is right... kiss my shiny metal ass) so I need to sell it and look for something else.
I'm kinda leaning towards a higher mile E46, or a cheap E30 or integra (no car payment, reliable, still somewhat fun). How many of E46's had fold down rear seats? My one criteria is that I need to be able to fit a bicycle in the car. Racks are nice, but I'm not leaving my $1500 bike on the rack in the parking garage while I'm at work.

2nd the van. Minivan. I know it's not "fun" but you could get bikes of the motored and non-motored variety around, they're cheap, and gas mileage is acceptable. FWIW, I rather like my Previa.
If interested, my coworker is looking to dump his E46 (I think it's an '01 325), it's been very well taken care of, silver, 2dr, 5-spd, is probably worth 12 something but the dealer is offering him 10ish as a trade in.

No vans. Reasonable MPG is another consideration, otherwise I'd just keep my truck.
This sucks mostly because I really like the way the VW drives - suspension/steering is very 'tight', feels solid going down the road and very little wind noise. I'd consider a 2.slow Jetta/GTI if the electric bits werent the same... but they are

I might be interested, but I need to get my truck back, sell that, and get the VW fixed before I can sell it so if he's looking to move the car I cant do it right now.

it seems like the only E46 to fall into your spending category will have some miles on it - do they hold up better than the E36? what about the cooling system, shock mounts, subframe -- do they have those issues? german car maintenance is a bitch. plus do you really want to be shoving a bike in that thing and tearing up the interior all the time?
seems like a hatch is your best bet. i know you aren't a fan of WRX's but the wagon would hold that really well and they're cheap.
mazda3's are cheap and fun. mini cooper S?
i say just get a $2000 DA teg, spray the rims gold and beat the hell out of it.
