Project Midlife Crisis - GTBrandon - 02-21-2018

So after going over the car at MAAP with Cole, giving it a proper wash, and cruising up 33, a list has begun of things I want to address on the car. Most seem pretty straightforward and can be covered with a shopping cart from SunCoast, while others might take a little digging or experience from others. As it goes so far:
  • New Coolant Cap (Failed Check Valve)
  • Noise in 1st gear (Around 3100rpm, not sure how to describe)
  • Frunk trim piece (Need two new screws, trouble finding part number)
  • Paint red lever black (Bothers me you can see when frunk is closed, same on 911's)
  • Clear side markers (God it needs it so bad)
  • New lugs (Currents are slightly rusty, also want to get rid of wheel locks)
  • New AC trim piece (Either replace or paint, buttons are worn on every car I've seen)
  • New radio (I need Bluetooth/aux ASAP, also a speaker might be blown on the side)
  • Service engine (Comes on when starting the car but can't figure out why)
  • Top conditioner/wax (Not sure how to care for these tops)
  • Align (Just for peace of mind really)
  • Paint correction bumper/side (Few knicks I want to fill in, and overall swirls)
  • Mirror whistle (Happens around 60mph with windows/top down, silicon sealant could fix)
  • Idle drop (Happened today, bounced from 800 to 600, then back in under a second)
  • Leaking Rim (Slight bend, was low on pressure but it was the first time I've checked pressures)

It just occurred to me that you may be the first round of students where owning a Porsche is a good idea because of MAAP. Has that point been made? Like, you probably have more support and knowledge around you with that car at JMU than any other make now.

That was one of my biggest reasons/justifications for getting a Porsche, although he does focus way more on the air cooled models.

Maaaan. That shot from the front on whatever back road really makes me want to be back in college with no cares, minimal responsibilities and my Miata. We did so many random drives because it was "top-down weather" and nobody had shit to do at 3:00 on a Tuesday.

Enjoy the shit out of this car, I suspect it'll help make some great memories for ya. Sounds like it's in pretty good condition aside from some minor stuff.

I always used some Meguiar's convertible top cleaner on my cloth tops and it did a good job. Cheap and available at Advance Auto.

The facelift wasn't a lot but overall I think these look much better than the original. I don't keep up on stats and stuff like I used to so I had to look this up and just over 300hp in that chassis has to be a lot of fun. Enjoy!

1,000 Mile Update:

The car has been awesome to drive, and with the heated seats and heat blasting, I've been using every opportunity to put the top down (Now just imagine when I can have Bluetooth and Tay* I mean Five Finger Death Punch blasting through the speakers.)

So I placed a small order with SunCoast and decided to start my Spring Break off right

First orders of business, replace those dreadful amber side markers, I swear this makes the car seem 5 years newer, and was surprised how easily the markers came out. Was a 10min job max.

Next was the coolant cap, as the check valve was stuck closed causing a tiny amount of coolant to spray out.

Then came the clips in the frunk. These keep the compartment closed that holds tire inflater, wheel lock, etc. Well I called a dealership before ordering and we were pretty sure the right part number had been tracked down for these clips, but going to install something doesn't seem right...

So I guess off to the dealer to hopefully track down the right part number as this thing bugs me so much when I go to open the trunk.

Finally was the door handle, which seems to be a common issue on these cars. Apparently, the previous owner had already gotten this fixed years back but it broke again sometime after so I had an un-erect door handle on my hands..

The fix involved taking off the door panel and McGyvering a replacement part with some of the old parts to keep me from taking off the outside handle and replacing the whole cable.

Hopefully, I didn't break any clips but if so, I guess I'll just order 9 new ones and rip this thing off instead of being gentle like I was the first time Wink

So now other than the new clips and AC buttons, the car is where I was it to be trim wise for the moment. Next up on the burner:
  • Full Paint Correction
  • AC Buttons ($150 for two little buttons??)
  • Mirror Whistle
  • Front Hood Struts ($20 at AutoZone vs $140 from Porsche, hmmm)
  • All Season Mats
  • Short Throw/New Cables?
  • New Side Vents
  • Bumperette Delete

So after a going around VIR and having some spirited backroad drives, I have some things I want to address:

Here’s what confuses me, when I drive hard the brakes start to vibrate as if they’re warped. BUT, once they have cooled down, they give off no vibration which leads me to think warped rotors is not the issue. Any thoughts?

Next, after hard driving, I heard the following noise from the coolant cap/tank area. I just topped off the fluid with another quart or so before this, and have already replaced the self-bleeding cap. Any thoughts on this/how worried should I be?

Next, at parking lot speeds, I hear a grinding when turning the steering wheel left. I have been advised that it’s probably wheel bearings but I didn’t feel much play in any wheels so I’m wondering if it could be anything else or if it’s just not bad enough to feel play yet?

Lastly, the shifter has a stupid amount of play partly from factory and partly from worn down bushings. I’m thinking I’ll do a short shift kit to fix this but just curious on opinions. I can either go $500 Porsche route, $300 B&M, or $60 eBay. Curious how dumb I would be to go with the cheap eBay shifter considering it’s only $60 and I don’t see what could be so different about these mechanisms.

The racecar had a failing wheel bearing that would make noise exactly like you describe, but everything "felt tight" when I tried jiggling the wheel around. I'd place your bets there.
