Our group "owns" this site: https://www.boostmobile.com/#!/ This role will manage long term design + platform migration projects, plus short term site maintenance/content/design projects. I'm not sure if there's more to the scope of the role, but that's the majority of it. We also put up 3 new Paid Search related roles if anyone is interested. Not 3 years of experience but I'll tell her anyway! Re: The MM Network - JohnC - 06-09-2017 Better late than never to this thread... Hi, I'm John! I was one of the founding members of MM, and graduated from JMU with a BS in Computer Science in 2002. My "career path" has been: Federal Government, Large Government Contractors, Small Government Contractor, Very Small Startups, Medium Startup, Entrepreneur/Co-Founder. I've bounced between pure engineering and management / executive roles a few times now. I also worked remotely for a year, and literally traveled around the world with my girlfriend (13 countries in 12 months). My last W2 job was as VP Engineering for a ~120 person ad-tech startup in NYC. I left that job in Dec 2016, and co-founded a small consultancy called Symphonia (https://www.symphonia.io) in Jan 2017. We're squarely focused on Serverless architecture and technology (like AWS Lambda) with a large dose of DevOps and lower-case agile. We just published a short book with O'Reilly titled "What is Serverless?" (http://www.oreilly.com/programming/free ... erless.csp), and we've been speaking at a ton of conferences across the country (and soon, internationally). We're also moving heavily into the workshop / tutorial space, and we just spent two days in a studio recording a video training series titled "Learning Lambda" for Addison Wesley. So, if you or your company is interested in learning more about the Serverless space, or want to level up your DevOps practice, or need some help figuring out how to shorten engineering lead times and accelerate delivery - drop me a line, "john@symphonia.io" or on my LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnathanchapin/). Conversely, if you're trying to break into the startup or tech industry in NYC (or Virginia), please get in touch. I've built up a pretty interesting network over the last 20 years, and am always happy to have a conversation and make sensible connections. Very cool to see MM'ers doing great things. Hopefully I'll be like y'all one day. Re: The MM Network - Sully - 06-19-2017 So I'm trying to revamp my resume to get it ready for applying to some more business centered jobs such as project coordinator roles to hopefully spring board towards a project management role in the future. I'm getting stuck on the skills portions. Either job or general. I tend to be super modest and reserved when it comes to "selling" myself. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for some things I might be overlooking. I'm not looking to lie but maybe there are some that I'm just not thinking an employer would care about that I may posess. Have someone in the field review it, someone that's been around for a long time. The resume is only to get your foot in the door - it goes in the trashcan shortly after that. Re: The MM Network - Senor_Taylor - 06-20-2017 .RJ Wrote:it goes in the trashcan shortly after that. Come on dude, it's 2017. Recycling bin. Re: The MM Network - Jake - 06-20-2017 Well so far I am having zero luck getting job offers out-of-area. I've had some great phone interviews, and a couple of in-person interviews, but I've either not been the right fit (fair) or been met with "well this is just hard when there's so much talent locally." So frustrating. Re: The MM Network - davej - 06-20-2017 Like outside of the NOVA area? Where are you looking, if you don't mind sharing. I struggled with the same issue trying to relocate two different times. Being a remote candidate is hard. I ended up opening a po box in the area I was applying and used that address on my resume. Call backs increased more than I expected and it gave me an opportunity explain myself. If it's a bigger company and they offer relocation, that might be an expense/paperwork the hiring manager doesn't want to go through. Lockheed had a sweet deal where basically we just got on a plane and someone came to pack our house, move it, and unload all the boxes and cars at the new house, but I think that ran like 15k or more by the time it was all said and done. I haven't even truly started looking. Is there any chance you can transfer to that area with your current company and then make the move to be "local"? Also, we should grab that beer and discuss. Re: The MM Network - Jake - 06-20-2017 Cabell, we don't have any offices where I'm looking, although I should do more research now that our acquisition is final. Might open up more doors. Dave, I'm looking at Richmond, Raleigh and Charlotte. I've thought about asking friends to use their addresses as I have friends in each of those cities. Might be worth a shot as I don't have tons of stuff to move, and would be very okay with just packing it all in a U-Haul and driving south at my own cost if relocation is too much to ask for. Put on your resume that you're interested in relocating, can do so in X timeframe, and a renter (if true). If they're worried about money, mentioning relocating opens the door for negotiation. If they're worried about time to start, this easily clarifies it for them. Re: The MM Network - Jake - 06-20-2017 Apoc Wrote:Jake Wrote:Dave, I'm looking at Richmond, Raleigh and Charlotte. Already done that and have had conversations about my timeframe, including "I could theoretically go whenever, as I can pay to get out of my lease at any time" and that still hasn't been good enough. |
