The Super Official Homeowners Thread - Sijray21 - 05-29-2018 I had fun this weekend. I relocated the hot tub that came with the house to the back patio. It stopped working 3.5 years ago and I didn't want to pay to get it fixed since we rarely use it. We're planning on fixing up the screened in back porch, so this will open up more space. Chain saw, axe, and a hatchet were used. I <3 demo. ![]() ![]() ![]()
The Super Official Homeowners Thread - JustinG - 05-29-2018 1/4 acre lot, but the house is obviously sitting on it. I can cut it with 25% left, unless its wet or I let it get too tall, at which time I can finish it with the battery from my trimmer/blower. Self propelled speed also impacts battery life. I cut at about 50% speed. Battery has 3yr warranty, mower has 5yr. If you use a CC that extends the warranty (Costco Citi card FTW) you get an extra 2yrs or whatever your card may give. I'm comfortable with the risk of needing a new battery, vs having to get/store gas. The charger is also "smart", it drains to a certain % and gets topped off. If it isnt pulled from the charger for 60days, I think, it goes into sleep mode and doesnt top it off. Also, just yank the battery after everycut and throw it on the charger, which can be wall mounted above your mower. I also like how it folds up and doesnt take up as much space. I also found all the electrics that were self-powered were $500+. I just couldn't justify spending that much for not having to deal with a can of gas (which I always have #BCRACECAR). I do want self-proppelled because while my backyard is flat, my side yards have an angle and it just makes it that much easier. I feel like electric mowers are somewhere between a techie toy and a fashion item. Every single fanboy review Ive read has been something like. "Its amazing it cuts almost as well as a gas as long as the grass is dry and its not too long, I love it!" So basically you're paying at least double for a shitty lawnmower. I bought a $200 craftsman briggs 10 years ago and its worked flawlessly every season with nothing but neglect and abuse. I buy 5 gallons of gas in the beginning of the season and that lasts me all year. Thats less $ than replacing an expensive battery every 4 or 5 years (if you even get that much out of it) I get that there is a niche use case for electrics if you have the cash to burn, but mowing a decent sized suburban lot isnt one of them. Hopefully batteries come down in price over the next few years and they can start making more sense but I dont think they are there yet. and I do have a battery powered trimmer which has been really good (05-29-2018, 10:55 AM)D_Eclipse9916 Wrote: Don't tell my wife but it's not so bad mowing the lawn.lol...this ^^^ RE: The Super Official Homeowners Thread - Apoc - 05-29-2018 I have the same electric Justin has. Mowing the yard is actually pleasurable now and it's something I kinda look forward to. I can't comment on total battery because we have a city yard (0.1 acre), but I haven't had battery issues using self-propelled 90% of the time. The charger has the smart protection Justin talks about, but I keep mine on a power strip so I can easily kill it for extended storage. I replaced a manual push mower because that sucked if the grass got marginally long. Definitely don't have that problem now. The only way I'd go back to gas is if I can ride on it. I live in a TH so it makes sense with the small yard. I can't see it working well with anything larger. The Super Official Homeowners Thread - JustinG - 05-29-2018 As an additon, I've had no issues with it cutting tall or saturated grass, but it does lower the battery life. I do also appreciate the lack of noise pollution. I can cut my grass at 8pm without having the neighbors give me evil looks, and i have had to a couple of times. They're great if you have the cash to spare, but they're not practical for all situations. RE: The Super Official Homeowners Thread - Jewels - 05-29-2018 I think this is all kinda true. I'd been using the battery powered mower because it was offered to me. However, if someone had offered a gas powered I'd have used that. I cannot justify the cost currently to buy either. I will say that the battery that's used on my mower is a Duracell battery that's almost the size of a tractor battery. I'm gonna take it into Battery Plus to see if they have a replacement. Hoping its not too expensive, but in fairness, its my only real cost associated with it other than charging it. And if it makes it better than all the better for when I return it to Rex's parents. RE: The Super Official Homeowners Thread - WRXtranceformed - 05-29-2018 Yeah I gave up on mowing my lawn down here. $35 every few weeks is 100% worth more to me than sweating my ass off in the heat down here between May and November RE: The Super Official Homeowners Thread - Evan - 05-29-2018 Every few weeks? Is your lawn all weeds? April through early June and September through October its every 2-3 days. Other times its once a week until winter. In the spring we mow it every 2 weeks and hit it once with the weed and feed at the beginning of the season. It mostly takes care of those...those that it doesn't kill usually just start to show at the 2 week mark. During the summer, the bermuda gets so thick it chokes out most of the weeds and it doesn't grow tall really fast, it just gets really thick. In the fall the grass goes into dormancy so we might mow it once every month or so and you pretty much don't need to touch it all winter until about March. I'm actually having the opposite problem right now, I need to get the grass to grow in thicker and taller in some areas. I may pony up and get someone who specializes in it to take a look. Our new house is at the end of a cul-de-sac and there is a horse farm behind us and a cattle farm beside us. We really only have one neighbor who is a retired state trooper. After talking to him, pretty much everyone who lives in the houses on our street are retired, which is perfectly fine with us. We closed at 11am on Wednesday and moved a few things with the truck and trailer that afternoon after cleaning up and coming to terms with the fact that I signed my life away, again. A lot of it is still a work in progress, but here’s a few quick snaps of the house. We’re having the back yard measured for a black chain link fence tomorrow, and the flat area off the deck is going to get a paver patio along with a fire pit. There are two other bedrooms that look like smaller versions of the master, along with a full bath. Additionally, there is a laundry room between the kitchen and the garage. Didn’t feel like you guys would care about pictures of those. I’m selling my Lowe’s John Deere and getting a X530 John Deere with a 48” cut for my .57 acre yard. Because I can pull a trailer with it, I can plow the driveway with it, I can pull a fertilizer spreader with it, etc etc. RE: The Super Official Homeowners Thread - Evan - 05-30-2018 (05-29-2018, 05:12 PM)WRXtranceformed Wrote: Bermuda bruh! There are a few people in our neighborhood that actually overseed with it in the fall so that their lawns look green through the winter (bermuda gets dull yellow / khaki colored when it goes dormant). There are other people who, I shit you not, actually have their lawns professional spraypainted green in the fall. Talk about standing out like a sore thumb. You also don't have to water bermuda much, it gets stronger during draughts to a point. The other big downside though is that it's crunchy to walk on and turns to like grass clipping dust when you mow near dormancy....that stuff gets EVERYWHERE in the house, garage, cars. Don't tell my wife but it's not so bad mowing the lawn. Can't go wrong with a Honda, I've had the self-propelled "cruise control" model for 5 years... the thing has been through several years of mowing a difficult .5 acre lot and with a simple yearly maintenance had absolutely no problems. I think the self-propelled mechanism is superior, much easier to use and modulate than similar setups. I still use it for mowing but do the main part of the yard with a zero-turn now. Yeah they used basically the same turf throughout the entire neighborhood and common areas. It's all finally greened up and looking like a golf course I forgot our exact strain of bermuda though, they told us during the construction process

I don’t think the oil burning engine is that strange of a concept, seems like it would operate in much the same fashion as a 2-stroke engine, which most weedeaters and some push mower engines use, you just don’t have to mix the oil and fuel beforehand. We’re really happy with the land so far! With the exception of the snake by the fence line we haven’t found any downsides. We had the yard marked for a black chain link fence and they should come and install it in about 2 weeks. Fencing in the whole back of the house and putting 12’ gates on each end, only going to end up being like $3,200. RE: The Super Official Homeowners Thread - ScottyB - 06-04-2018 i can't for the life of me find it but somewhere back in this thread i was bitching about our LG dishwasher crapping out back around winter after the control panel spent a couple months having seizures. just out of warranty. finally got it fixed on LG's dime. i have to hand it to them, they were actually pretty useful after we called them directly and explained how a year and a half isn't an acceptable lifespan for a dishwasher, and that (completely truthfully) we were long time LG buyers and intended to buy a washer/dryer set this summer and those plans were in jeopardy if they can't stand behind their product. they were understanding and covered the full cost and replacement of a new control panel through a local certified repair company. downside was i had to wait about 2 months to get the new panel as it was backordered (surprise). you never realize how many dirty dishes a small family makes until you have to sit and wash them by hand every night and the time it takes to do that. what a luxury i took for granted. i have no idea if this new part is improved or just a straight replacement that will die again in a year, but for now its doing what its supposed to, and hopefully it stays that way for a long time. |
