In all seriousness I did find a few decent private rooms but they were all relatively close to what it'd be for a cheap apartment. Both were a good bit more than just splitting something decent in half. Will probably bite the bullet with a six month lease and look for a roommate when the timeline isn't so tight. I still haven't accepted anything yet since I have something in motion with a solid startup in Charlottesville in motion. Nah, but seriously explore those opportunities. Cap One is a great place to start a career and gives plenty of flexible opportunity to move within, but it's always a good idea to see what you'll get a chance at! RE: The MM Network - Deceus - 04-22-2019 So I'm taking the Capital One offer and running. Found a decent 1 bedroom apartment with a killer summer move-in special. I reached out to the start-up and let them know I got an offer and we'd have to fit the 2 interviews into this week. They just said "take the offer, you're not a great fit anyways". Sooo apparently 200+ hours of classes, a week long boot camp, an extensive portfolio on GitHub AND a current consulting gig with a small company porting their desktop application into Angular isn't enough to convince the businesses of Charlottesville that I can in fact work on JavaScript applications. ![]() The kicker is the recruiters straight up told me they don't understand why I'm taking the offer. This is the third company that rejected my application without even sitting down with me because of my background. They don't even have anything else lined up for me at the moment and at least one of them seemed legitimately upset that I was walking away from Charlottesville as an option. I get 3 isn't the greatest sample size but it's not like I was getting anything close to an offer. The fact that salary was pretty much discussed right up front each time leads me to believe these companies were only entertaining the idea as an opportunity to underpay someone. Good luck finding that perfect fit on a shoestring budget. The interview at Capital One was great to be honest. It went smoothly with no surprises. We just discussed my resume and they went over a few gaps they had concerns about but I was to put them at ease since back-end Java and Nodejs share a lot in common. They were relived I knew what pipes and arrow functions were and weren't concerned at all I didn't have any real exposure to AWS. Basically they just wanted to know if I was ready and able to dive into a stack I was unfamiliar with and hit the ground running. Thanks to everyone for listening to my griping, hopefully it's been an entertaining read. An extra thanks for the Capital One referrals. Definitely going to continue working in my spare time to make sure this kind of job search doesn't happen again. RE: The MM Network - .RJ - 04-22-2019 I had a lot of frustration when shopping for a job in Charlottesville last year. Seemed like amateur hour, no one knew what they wanted to hire, and salary was going to be a 40-50% pay cut to do more work. The MM Network - JustinG - 04-22-2019 Welcome to RVA, cheap houses, good beer, no traffic. The MM Network - rherold9 - 04-22-2019 Yeah, there's like no traffic, but I'm so used that when there is any mild inconvenience like a 15-20 minute delay from an accident I get aggressively upset. Beer meca too. I've cut down significantly because I was getting super fat... Looking forward to working with ya!! Funny story .... I ran into this leaving the interview: ![]() The entire interstate was shutdown except for one lane on each side. How the hell does something like this even happen? The MM Network - rherold9 - 04-22-2019 That was the other day and yeah I avoided that road that day no idea how that happens... I always use Waze here because some how that shit randomly happens Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk RE: The MM Network - Deceus - 04-22-2019 I wasn't too mad about it. I popped into Cork's and Kegs to grab some beer and ended up leaving with a bunch of Commonwealth beers I've been wanting to try and a growler of Aslin. Popped into some restaurant next door and tried something from Triple Crossing which was amazing and had one of the best crab cake sandwiches I've ever had. Must've just caught it because all I saw was a six minute delay at first and then it just kept climbing. Was too late to do anything before I realized I'd be sitting for 30 minutes. Was really hard not to crack one of the beers I had sitting next to me though haha. RE: The MM Network - .RJ - 04-22-2019 Surprised Aslin is doing growler fills down there, which beer was it? RE: The MM Network - JPolen01 - 04-30-2019 Any white people looking for a tech job in Nova? Cynet is looking to hire 'preferably caucasian candidates'. RE: The MM Network - Ken - 05-02-2019 Anybody looking for an entry level sales job? My company is hiring for inside sales - preference for someone with some basic IT knowledge. This would be based out of NYC. Let me know. RE: The MM Network - Senor_Taylor - 05-03-2019 Anyone have experience with CACI? Applied for a Business Analyst position there. RE: The MM Network - Apoc - 05-03-2019 (05-03-2019, 03:12 PM)Senor_Taylor Wrote: Anyone have experience with CACI? Applied for a Business Analyst position there. I spent a few months there after they bought part of the federal financial software I was a BA for. It was definitely not for me... but that's probably true of every government contractor company that's ever existed. RE: The MM Network - Senor_Taylor - 05-03-2019 That actually brings me to something else. Does anyone want to look at my resume and maybe suggest what I may be suited for? I'm not sure if I'm looking at the right places/roles or searching using the right job titles. RE: The MM Network - Senor_Taylor - 05-08-2019 Not sure if I mentioned this, but I've been getting hounded about my timesheet lately and it's been stressing me out. Required to log 45 hours a week "productive hours" so no lunch breaks, no rest room breaks, nothing is counted that isn't backed up by time logged in Jira or Salesforce. The only exception is my "admin" code that I need to try to squeeze all of my restroom breaks, email checking, slack messaging, walking to and from meetings, etc into. It's really really difficult and everyone hates it. I bring it up all of the time and I'm just told "It's the way the company is" which is BS because I know other teams aren't required to log as much time. I've continued to tweak my resume and apply for jobs, but today an internal PM role came up and I've asked my manager if I can apply. However, I have little faith he'll allow me. RE: The MM Network - Apoc - 05-08-2019 That's how reporting time was at CACI for me. RE: The MM Network - G.Irish - 05-08-2019 Why do you have to ask your manager if you can apply? Seems kinda counterproductive to give managers power over what internal positions are applied for. It means that some (or even many) managers will just say no because they want to keep productive people on their team. Either way you should probably leave this company if they're hitting you with timesheet bullshit. Management that nitpicks on time like that is incompetent in my opinion. Or trying to goad people into quitting, which is shitty in another way. |
