Senor_Taylor Wrote:I wish I had more time to write a response, but here goes. I agree with Evan. Why does it matter? I think the motivation to writing this article was the fact that this lady happens to like cars, and notices the gender difference and thinks "Since I like cars, all girls should like cars!" when she's really just an outlier. Men and women like different things.(usually) and if you try to push some kind of gender equality issue on this, you're trying too hard. Where's the article about how Mary Kay parties are mostly women? HOW DARE MARY KAY KEEP MEN OUT!!!!
I think you're reading into things that simply aren't there. She isn't pushing for gender equality, just saying that female car enthusiasts shouldn't be treated differently, they should just be considered 'enthusiasts'. And that maybe there would be more female enthusiasts if things were different. Sure men are a good deal more likely to be into cars than women, but it may not necessarily always be that way. Just in the time I've been into motorsports I've seen the demographics shift significantly.

I've also seen firsthand how shitty it can be for females in some parts of automotive culture. A lot of the time it amounts to a ton of unwanted leg-humping or general harassment at events. Online you get all of the ridiculous people demanding pics and PM's to female members that turns them off. But again, that is largely dependent on the community you're in, at the racetrack people are much more respectful than people are at the typical street tuner car show. Online some communities are far and away better than others. Some of the motorcycle communities for instance are a bit too much about T&A and I have to think that's kind of a turn off.

I think as long as people are friendly and welcoming and willing to expose new people to the hobby you're naturally going to see more women get into it. I think a lot of times people in this hobby can be hostile to noobs and that shuts people off. Then there's the general internet hostility that some people see and just decide to do something else rather than deal with people's bullshit.

I'm not denying the weirdness towards women in this area. I've pointed it out a million times even in MM. In my time here, I've only seen one girl member out several that wasn't brought into an awkward situation whether they knew it or not. You said what I should have said and you said it well, Gerald. Honestly, I think the only reason people want more girls in MM is to "get rid of the sausage fest", which I've heard too many damn times. If you want more genuine csr enthusiasts, great! If you want them around just to have boobs to stare at and drunkenly flirt with, not great.

She also loves things that light up.

And her bear.

And her pink shoes. That said, the answer to the question of "Where are the female car enthusiasts" is probably the same as "Where are the female computer scientists" and "Where are the female engineers" and "Where are the female Practical Shooting Competitors" and "Where are the Female Hunters" and "Where are the Stay At Home Dads"...

Male dominated fields tend to stay male dominated just do to societal structure. That doesn't automatically mean there is a barrier to entry. The real question is, "is there a compelling need to change." To which I say, :dunno:
I think the answer to a lot of that is what messages are women getting while they're growing up, which will inform decisions they make in their teenage years and beyond. The one thing in common most of the female members that have come through MM have had is that all of them had dads who were enthusiasts and included them in their hobby. So while girls are growing up as long as they're not getting the message, "This is not for girls," and get some exposure to male-dominated stuff, you'll see more women in different things.

So for the lack of stay-at-home dads or female computer science or minorities in a given feild, it comes down to what messages those people are getting while they grow up and socialize. The other component is that in those respective fields you've gotta remove any ingrained discrimination or hostility towards the people who are currently underrepresented.

The point is not to have perfect demographic representation for every facet of life, you'll never have that. Just that there aren't any institutionalized barriers to entry. Kind of the whole, equality of opportunity not equality of ends.

Agreed. I think if people want to socialize with more girls through the club, have a mixer with a club that is primarily female and call it a day.

If sausagefests are problems at MM parties that's because something has gone terribly wrong while planning and spreading the word for the party, not really a problem with MM.

1. Have female friends.
2. Plan a party, have good music and drinks
3. Have a fun theme
4. Spread the word to as many female friends as possible, particularly those that are active in an organization. Don't worry as much about the guys because if the women come, the guys will come.

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - Senor_Taylor - 10-24-2014

The same issue comes up with the Gender income gap. There really aren't as many barriers as there seems. Women just tend to pick jobs that aren't as well paying( such as teaching, hair stylists, etc). There are definitely more barriers in that regard than being in the automotive field. Also, you can't say girls aren't more naturally inclined towards dolls than cars. It's in our genetics for girls to want to take car of things and be motherly. People try to hard to be "progressive" sometimes.

I'm not trying to say woman don't belong and we shouldn't encourage woman to pick up the hobby, I'm just trying to give the other end of this whole white knight parade.

There is no such thing.

If I were a business owner and I could get the same amount and quality of work as a man from a woman for 30% less, no woman would ever be unemployed. But I can't, because the whole 'Women earn 70 cents for doing the same work a man gets a dollar for' is buuuuullllshiiiiiiit.

Just this, really. (Now ask me about Affirmative Action).

You might read my post again. I just said it's due to women picking lower paying jobs, not women making less money for the same job.

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - G.Irish - 10-24-2014

The gender income gap is a lot of things. There's the industries women tend to go into, but there's also the fact that women don't tend to negotiate as hard for their salary over the course of their careers. But women also often take a big hit to their careers when they have children and there are also a good number of knuckle-draggers in business who outright discriminate against women in business. One of my freelance customers was telling me a client of his told him he wouldn't promote one of his employees because 'women aren't good at math' even though the woman in question had an engineering degree and by his own admission did her job well.

There are innate tendencies that people are born with, the rest is cultural/environment.

I should note that my knowledge on the subject is from like the last 2 weeks of discussing it in my POSC class.

Got to love a good ol' Taylor assumption. I'm glad based on the FB comments Ryan and i are actually on the same page.

Where exactly did i say i wish there more car girls in MM? Cause that article was referring to girls all over the world in motorsport and thats what i was referring to. Then where did i say i wanted more girl in MM for the purpose of sex? I, and from the looks of it Ryan, wants girls in the motorsport world in general for some diversity. And the girls are there. Maybe not at jmu but all over. And all that article is saying is if you allow girls to be into the cars you'd be surprised at how many more car girls there will be. And thats true.

We had a Datsun Maxima as the first car I can ever remember riding around in as a kid. It was fully effin' loaded for a 1980 something. Anyway, the main thing I remember from the car is that it talked to you - "The key is In Ignition" and various other shit.

TIL that was all being played on a tiny record;
