Its up to the manufacturer...then the carrier approving updates. But you can easily run a stable custom OS that gets you any new features.

chromebook is even more retarded.
its like a laptop, except oh wait, you cant do jack shit on it. no apps. no local storage or hard drive. just a fucking web browser.
and charge $1400 for it, which you could buy a high end real laptop with actual real functionality. hell you can buy an overpriced macbook for that much

Here's a question - why a Chromebook instead of a similarly-priced tablet? You could get any sort of Android tablet or perhaps an iPad for roughly $250-300, and they both have a whole infrastructure of apps behind 'em.

I mean, it's a very quick, very light piece of kit. Honestly, I think it'd be great for a writer on the go. (Note, discussing the samsung $250 chromebook)
We compared, this weekend, the chromebook to Jon Felton's iPad and bluetooth keyboard abomination and frankly, the chromebook beat the pants off of that, both for pricepoint and utility.

I had a Chromebook for awhile and I'd say that the keyboard, USB and SD card slots, automatic updates, and overall straightforward experience are what may make it better for some users than an iPad. Even an iPad mini is $330, a full-size iPad starts at $400 and you don't get 3G or a keyboard with that.
My mom used the Chromebook for awhile and loved it. For someone like me it's not particularly useful but for users with simple needs it might fit the bill. But really, my impression from Google I/O is that Chrome OS is really aimed at education and business/government. In those markets having a very simple box that just does the web might make sense.

I'd really like a samsung chrome book... I really dont *need* one but, I like having a keyboard while loafing on the couch.
I have an iPad, but I find I use it much more for travel and reading books/magazines.

ok IE haterz, just DL'ed IE10 and holy crap is it fast. I didnt expect it to touch chrome but it beats it by 60% in sunspider benchmark
(which is made by the people who make chrome's core, no less)

I've been running Windows much of the past week so I can play SimCity... Been using IE10. Aside from not having all the add-ons that I love for Safari, it's not bad at all. I do hate the notifications in the bottom of the window though... WHERE I NEVER SEE THEM.
