RE: The MM Network - WRXtranceformed - 02-22-2019 The most pride I've taken as a manager is seeing my former employees go on to do big things / better themselves. One is now at Amazon and we still have a fantastic relationship, another went back to grad school (against my advice because I was teeing him up to take my job, but he's happy so that's all that matters). If you aren't a buffer to your team and work as hard as you can to give them internal exposure and kudos for their hard work, you're doing it wrong RE: The MM Network - Jake - 02-22-2019 (02-22-2019, 11:41 AM)Senor_Taylor Wrote: I haven't had any bites on anything within reasonable commuting times. From what I remember, you were very hesitant to commute too far time or distance wise. I'm not suggesting you take a job in Baltimore, but you may need to embrace the idea of a drive to Reston or a Metro ride to somewhere in NW DC. There are definitely external opportunities for someone in your boat, but you are limiting yourself if you want to only work in Tysons. My commute to CEB was never "great" and in the early days, was frequently an hour each way from Fairfax/Reston to Rosslyn. But it was worth it for the most part. Best that one ever got was ~35 minutes when I lived in Alexandria. RE: The MM Network - .RJ - 02-22-2019 what jake said. you dont have enough experience yet to be too choosy. not to say you cant get what you want its just a lot more difficult. you also dont have anything tethering you to moving around to match your job location every year. The MM Network - Senor_Taylor - 02-22-2019 A short commute is important for my mental health. I'm not desperate for a job so I'll wait for the right one. I like my current townhouse. I like my roommates. I'm completely open to reverse commuting to Reston/Ashburn/Sterling and have been applying to those. I'm not interested in commuting into DC. This. Also, it's better to have a few offers in hand to give you leverage to negotiate, even if some offers are for work locations you'd prefer not to commute to. You may even be able to offset the commute with a few remote days per week. The MM Network - Senor_Taylor - 02-22-2019 I'll keep that in mind. Thanks! Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk RE: The MM Network - Senor_Taylor - 03-10-2019 Met again with my manager last week and was told that they "can't afford to lose me" so they need me to stay on the team until Q4 2019 or Q1 of 2020 before I can move to another team. I tried to very politely and directly say that a move sooner than that is beneficial to everyone if they'd like my knowledge to be available to the team since they can always reach out to me on another team for help IF I'm still with the company. I don't really think my manager understands the subtleties of English well enough to pick up my idle threat, and I'm not comfortable saying any more bluntly that I'm looking elsewhere since I'd actually really like to stay within the company. So, I'm biding my time and still applying elsewhere while I continue to do my job and do my best to not rock the boat, keep my head down, and just do my job. Another person on the team that started after me quit this week (they haven't announced it yet and I'm the only non manager that knows) so now I'm actually back to being the newest person on my specific team even though I've been there 2 years. My team in HQ is now 5 people, where as it was 5 when I joined and 6 people have quit in that same time. So they're definitely desperate to keep me. My "Goals" for 2019 was to basically train everyone on the niche knowledge I've amassed over 2 years. They've kept telling me that they'd be happy if I changed my mind and decided to stay and they also dangled the idea that I will be promoted TWO times up to Senior Engineer if I stay until 2020, but at this point, I don't trust them at all. My GF is the one that left this week and she's been telling me how absolutely rude and hostile they've been now that's she's leaving unexpectedly. I'm sure their management is really bearing down on them since my company has doubled in size from 2000 to 4000 since I've started, yet my team in HQ hasn't been able to retain anyone. The 4 people hired after me that I was supposed to pass on all of my knowledge to all left, including one extremely good engineer they really counted on staying, and also 2 senior engineers left for better pay/hours/work. What a mess. RE: The MM Network - .RJ - 03-10-2019 Ask them to print their promises on 2-ply so you can at least wipe your ass with them. RE: The MM Network - HAULN-SS - 03-10-2019 Bruh..don't be a loyal idiot. If a company isn't allowing you to progress the way you want, get out. Ask for a 20% raise when you jump, too. If the company is growing as fast as you say it is, they will want to work to retain people. Otherwise, 2-ply... Last year I got a 4/5 rating, which is as high as you can get without winning some major yearly award and got an 8% raise. This year, after telling me what they told me and giving me a lower review, they gave me a 10% raise. I'm thinking it's because I told them I want to leave and they're trying to get me to stay. Either way, I can't complain about losing out on the title bump with a raise like that. RE: The MM Network - Apoc - 03-14-2019 I tend to think titles are meaningless as long as you're getting paid. I took a level/title cut in my last three company changes. I've interviewed quite a few people who got hung up on the title being offered. I think it's their loss - the second bold job's total comp is ~2.3x that of the first bold job. RE: The MM Network - Deceus - 03-15-2019 So I did something incredibly stupid today and put in my notice without anything actually lined up. I just don't have the time to deal with this job, the car, my consulting gig, building my portfolio AND my job search. Something just had to go and after a week of hand-holding and fixing idiot problems instead of coding problems I made my choice. Sucks to see such a wonderful job go down the shitter as hard and fast as this one did. Here goes nothing though, can't wait for the stupidity that awaits me like balancing binary trees from memory for a job building APIs on a CRUD app. (Non-tech people just imagine Jiffy Lube asking you to build a model rocket and explain the physics behind it for a job) RE: The MM Network - Senor_Taylor - 03-15-2019 (03-15-2019, 10:39 AM)Deceus Wrote: So I did something incredibly stupid today and put in my notice without anything actually lined up. Let me know if there's anything I can do to lend a hand in your search. She just managed to retain her most valuable employee with just a title bump and NO raise whatsoever Personally I couldn't give three shits about my title. Pay and responsibilities are all that really matter. RE: The MM Network - WRXtranceformed - 03-15-2019 Indeed, titles don't pay the bills Good luck Deceus, it's a gutsy move but fortune favors the bold. Lucky for you, developers have like a 1-2% unemployment rate across the country and in the DC area or anywhere thereabouts in VA it's probably even lower. You'll land in a place that's worth it RE: The MM Network - Apoc - 03-15-2019 (03-14-2019, 03:20 PM).RJ Wrote:(03-14-2019, 03:12 PM)Apoc Wrote: I've interviewed quite a few people who got hung up on the title being offered. The one I remember most vividly was from the DC area. The offer was a 15% raise in total comp, but refused to take the job because of title and because he wanted to be able to say his "salary" went up. Had he taken the job, AMZN stock price would have overpaid him a significant amount over that 15% raise. Oh well. |
