I had an E30 ix and the only problem with the AWD system after 160K miles was a stretched chain. When I had it I spent a lot of time on bimmer forums and I can't say that it was a crappy system from a reliability standpoint. It wasn't as performance oriented as say Audi or Subbies but it was hardly riddled with problems. At least from my perspective. It had something like a 65/35 rear/front torque split. It added a bunch of weight and with little power was a bit of a slug compared to an is, especially an automatic. It was great in the snow / rain and I think that was BMWs point. Compared to a rally derived or intentioned system, yes, maybe crappy in that respect. And my guess is, the new system is designed with similar goals. I haven't seen any newer x models competing in rally or any motivation from BMW to prove its system in that way.
John Estep owned E&E Auto Sales on the north side of H'burg and started out as a 2002 restorer. He also ad a high mileage E30 ix and didn't have any problems. The biggest problem he had was sourcing my chain.
I miss my ix, it needed more boost or LS but it was a fun car. (<--There is a project in there somewhere, or I could just burn the cash and save myself the headaches)

The C30 is overpriced and very unrefined compared to the GTI or Mazda3.
