It will be intersting to see if VTEC, SRT and the like, become the new Big Block w/ 4spd. I mean not ALL 60's Camaros and Mustangs are collectible. The vast majority are desirable drivers.
I think a Miata will be collectible the way an MGB is today, but not the way a 69 Z28 Camaro is. And that's not a bad thing.
Fox body 5.0 Mustangs..ehh maybe if during that era they made a big block version or something to set a few apart from the million others that all got the same option package. (SVO?) Are there any out there that were ordered with a special package that had radio and AC delete or things of that nature? There will always be a Mustang following but I think collectible has a higher standard.
Same goes for C4, they are now judged by National Corvette Restoration Society but even a perfect car is hardly "collectible". As mentioned before, the ZR1, Grand Sports and I'll include the SCCA Corvette Challenge cars may be but the other million they built from 84-96, they will be mostly drivers. Maybe one day I'll regret chopping my car up, but I doubt it.

Yeah, I don't think you have anything to worry about. The C4 is a great car and all, but any car that more or less stayed the same (tech-wise, shape-wise), but got a little bit better with new generations I don't think will be a true collectible.

Collectibles are what people look back as what they wanted but couldnt get as children.
However, now that we have a spoiled ass generation of morons that bought too much I dont think we will have the same appreciation as those in the "good ole days". My dad had a clunker that he had to park on a hill so that when he drove it he had to get it rolling down hill to start. I get a car that by the time I was old enough to drink I was already racing it. We are a generation that got more than we deserved, simply put, we dont have the same appreciation.
The supra, rx7, z06s will all have places in their history, and will be in museums, however as collectibles in the way we "identify" the word collectibles will never be the same.

A well cared for car will be pretty reliable. It's not going to spin a bearing drop a valve, bust a timing belt/chain. Things like water pump, valve cover gaskets typical for 15 year old cars will need attention. Engine mgt is OBD1 so pretty straight forward, no fancy tools needed if something does go wrong. Mine was a reliable DD with 130K on it before I started messing with it. I would shop for at least 89+ (ZF 6spd) with an eye out for 92+ (LT1).
To be sort of on topic, look for a ZR1, they are a steal now, bulletproof, simply beautiful under the hood and the sound and feel of a 350 at 7200rpm is awesome. I am hoping the prices will stay low for a couple more years..

I saw a CL ad a few weeks ago for a C4 ZR1 in Salem for sale, 950 miles on the clock for 40k...

w00t! then again, I could probably get a lot of money for my unmodded 04 today since its probably the only remaining (essentially) stock STi in N. America.
