Hahaha.. that should be marked as NSFW in my office.. lol

Dear Deersty,

I am so glad that you came around when you did. Given recent Rob lapses, your initiation in to MM and subsequent fall-apartedness were timed perfectly.

Sincerely,
Michael

Perhaps you all would google clicking languages, and see that many african languages use them, a chinese dialect uses them, and many languages use pitch variation to differentiate words. I'm done educating though...

- Apoc - 07-15-2008

Much like Feersty, the problem is the connections you make in your head seem to get lost somewhere between the top of your spinal cord and your keyboard.

- KPWSerpiente - 07-16-2008

How can you be done educating? I'm not done learning!

Now we're talking about African clicking languages? Awesome. Fill me in. I'm amazed at the things you know about language without, what I am assuming, formal training or education of any kind.

You obviously have extensive experience with clicking languages, and with linguistics in general, so I'll make this short and simple (the only way my feeble mind understands it). The only reason our Aryan language is more "exacting" is because you live in *this* society, built around our language, English. Of course clicking means nothing to you.

Language influences thought just as much as the contrary. Language is also derived from circumstance or necessity. There are definitely words in those silly clicking languages that describe things that we can't in English.

I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm sure you knew all of this since you know so much about languages, linguistics, and linguistic anthropology. Just curious, how many languages do you know again? How much traveling have you done? How many times have you lived in a country with a primary language other than English?

Clearly, those subjects have no relevance to the topic at hand.

Confucious say never argue with fool...he may be doing same thing.

Confucious also say man with hole in pocket feel cocky all day

Confucius also say man with hole in both pockets not feel too cocky!

Did I start all this crap with my stupid poll? I am waiting for "Banned" notice.......

- HAULN-SS - 07-16-2008

confucious also probably said you don't have to know something to know about something. I spent a lot of time studying languages at one time in my life, indeed. I don't have a degree in any language but mathematics, though. I never said English was the only exacting z0mg language ever, what I am saying though, is that there is a reason so many people speak it, and why the countries that primarily speak it are relatively successful. If some other language was so terribly awesome, you'd think it would have made itself more prominent over the ages, wouldn't you? If I spoke a clicking language, obviously I would understand it. If it was my native tongue, would I be able to communicate as effectively, efficiently, and expressively? Probably not.

- HAULN-SS - 07-16-2008

oh and just in case you're wondering why i ever got interested in languages - it was in studying cryptography that I started to think about decrypting things written in another language, and knowing when you had them in plain text, if you didn't know the language.

Talk about the cart before the horse.

They speak English because to grow economically they needed to trade with the US, whose economy was booming after WWII. They're not "successful" because they spoke English, they spoke English because they wanted to sell us their shit.

There now you got me involved in this "way off topic" discussion. Big Grin

That's why they receive $1.64 billion of economic aid from us annually? Because they are doing so well?

I'm a little confused with your double logic tactics. So I'm gonna continue acting tough until I figure them out.
