ScottyB Wrote:the difference between a 5 and 10W-30 is thickness when cold. you can get away with a thicker 10W oil in warmer climates during startup.

in your case neither oil would protect better under high heat since they are both 30 weight when at operating temperature. thickness does not necessarily protect better anyway but that is for another thread.

also, you will mostly likely not lose any MPG's until you get into some fairly thick oils like a 10W-40 or 20W-50. some cars are more sensitive than others though.

Ah glad you could clear that up Scott (aka the oil expert). I see that I was wrong about the high heat situations but doesn't most wear occur at below operating temperatures like at start up, etc?

Nonetheless I'll definitely look into some GC 0w-30 or something similar for the near future.

Seriously? Please explain...

I think Jeff's just being an ass. He drives a Mopar, he's used to random, unexplainable destruction of engines. :-)

- Jeff - 04-08-2008

I'm used to predictable, use-related destruction of engines David. But yes, I was being an ass.

yes. the worst is at startup before your oil pump builds pressure and your rotating parts are riding on a leftover oil residue from the last time you shut down. that said you can also do damage at operating temp by overheating the oil, running oil that is very old (a 30 weight sheered down to a 20 weight for example) or running low amounts of oil.

you are probably fine, but if you want check out GC, shell rotella-T 5W-40 and even a thicker weight of penzoil platinum are all good, easily available and span a wide range of prices with GC being most expensive and PP being the cheapest. NASIOC has some used oil analysis on these if you search.

Ah so you're jealous I can do long WOT pulls on the highway and not end up with a engine bay covered in oil?

Except all those WRX's are probably still on the road today and your "WRX pwner" is no more. So I'd have to say you're the one that ultimately got pwned in the end

Mike...you are the hatenist of the hatin haters. Can I just win once? Once? Can't I just joke around and not get bullshit from you?

And Adam (it is adam right?) if you keep it up you'll never get that check. :p Know your place beyotch! My van is still "on the road" and I'm sure it is still pwning WRXs.

- flintster55 - 04-08-2008

Fine then, go get it back and we'll see if it pwns this WRX. You can put your money where your mouth is too you wannabe gangster
