It's hard for me to explain it, but her family's perspective on life is very much like any small town mentality. They know what they know, and they're happy with what the know and what they have. Anything beyond the realm of their comfort zone is alien and undesirable. Beata and I can't relate to that though...
Also, while the infrastructure has improved over recent years, it still lags well behind the other Soviet bloc nations in things like roads. Roads here are atrocious - the best making the PA Turnpike look good. Most are bumpy two-lane roads with open passing - even with my aggressive driving, it's hard for me to average 80kmph (50mph) on long trips. Busses are even slower, and trains, even worse. Consequently, it's hard and time-consuming for people to get from point A to B.
