Mike Wrote:maeng, what is your speedo showing at the end of the front straight?

i would hit redline in 4th just before the braking zone for T1, so i was playing around a lot with the front straight by changing shift points. sometimes i would short shift to 5th, sometimes i'd try to peg the rev limiter hoping my motor didnt pop in the braking zone for 1. either way i was consistently showing between 108 and 110.

my weekend went quite well. as already stated, saturday was close to unbearable, but i still say that VIR i think it was either last august or two augusts ago was hotter. i've been having some brake issues but i think its because these cobalt XR4's are definitely not street pads. i didnt change them out because i was going to the track not too long after my previous event, and it was so hot that i didnt drive the miata much, but they definitely chew up the rotor during everyday driving. i got harder and harder on them throughout the weekend and you could visibly see the rotor surface changing from a dull scratched up surface to a smooth dark shiny surface (with some scoring). thats when i could really stand on the brakes instead of getting on them and lockin' dem shits up. but when you're having brake issues, it takes a lot of confidence to make the jump back into threshold braking so i found myself slowing down too much (death for miatas and all momentum cars) for a few turns. also, i dont like my azenis but they just wont die. they get greasy as hell early in sessions and my car slides and pushes more and more as i clock more and more laps. i'm definitely looking forward to killing these things so i can put on my busted used toyos.

my students were doing really well this weekend too. i had a guy in an R32 and a guy wanting to do spec miata. i forgot how much torque those R32s have, man thats a fast car. and the spec miata driver made amazing improvements throughout the weekend. he was definitely one of the most receptive students i've ever had.

all in all, i had a blast this weekend and i look forward to seeing more MMers in the next few events

so who's going to photoshop this perfect template and have matt say whatever we want him to say on this white board?

Sad so that means my car really is way down on power... back when i started tracking i was hitting 120 easily. now it's a serious struggle to 115 WITH an exit of 93ish.

or your speedo is wacky... my integra with the same exact motor as yours, dont know about your tranny, would hit 120 easily as well but i suspect its speedo was way off

there is nothing more inaccurate than trying to judge speeds at the end of a straight than glancing at your speedo....

- Maengelito - 08-28-2007

while i agree, its difficult to measure speed when comparing two different cars and no one with a gun

i'll put it this way... i used to hit the rev limiter in 4th, but now i do not Tongue

Probably needs nothing more than having the head rebuilt (guides, seals, seats). $600 or so (with gaskets) and a 2-3 hrs of your time.

I'm curious why you need to spend more money to go faster in a DE car.

I'm seriously asking.

Seems to me its more fixing a busted engine than the simple purpose of going faster.

But, beside that, going faster is more fun. Otherwise we'd all drive on track in 80hp honda civics with 185 width all seaon tires.

There was no warning and luckily I was able to get on the brakes to avoid it but it slammed into the side of the E36, flew up in the air, and landed behind us!! It dented the side of the bmw and scared the shit out of me.

Collin was the instructor in the BMW and he's wondering if anyone has video of the deer hitting the BMW, were you running in-camera or do you remember anyone else around when it happened?

sorry, no in-car camera. I don't think anyone else was around us at the time the deer hit his car. The flaggers didn't even see it because they never threw a flag even though it was on-line coming out of 2.

because:

a) faster is more fun
b) the closing speed that some cars have on me is not safe
c) it's difficult to continue learning when you have to give a point-by every other corner
d) i'm wondering what's going on with my engine

- Maengelito - 08-28-2007

oh yeah, mikey, you left your JDM beanie at the track. i've got it and i'll hook you up at the next event

- Mike - 08-28-2007

phew! that thing is priceless! Wink thanks!

Go back to HPDE2 then. Is that short haired girl still coming that drives that mini? She was a rolling chicane in every fucking HPDE group.

If mikey is carrying over 90mph out of T10, I'd say that the driving isnt a problem. Thats not too far off what I was getting in the racecar.
