- Evan - 04-15-2005 JohnC Wrote:Reading comprehension owns you. That being said, downhill on a dirt bike is fun too. The situation you mentioned above, but with a 2-stroke screaming under the seat. A visceral experience, to say the least. Mountain bikers and dirt bikers share a similar sense of insanity. Now you are the one playing stupid semantics games. You made some irrelevant qualification about the grade of the trail and I ignored it, because it makes absolutely no difference to the point. Your point was that you couldnt go fast enough to be "uncomfortable" on a mt. bike, and Im saying it is quite easy. The grade of the trail doesnt make one bit of difference when comparing the activities. Quote:No, but it is an excellent illustration of power delivery, and the speed with which power can be applied with a dirt bike vs. a mountain bike. Well, I cant do a burnout in my miata, so that must mean that I know absolutely nothing about driving a higher powered car, because the power deliver is so different, so the skills dont translate at all. You are right, I missed that point, because its retarded. Captain Obvious Wrote:Quote:Balance - Hard to explain, but it just *feels* vastly different to me. ...Sure, it feels different. So do Fwd and rwd cars, 100hp and 300hp cars, so do different types of tires and suspension, but you sure as shit arent starting over from scratch when you move from one to the other. Quote:I agree. Then if its so obvious, and you agree, why did you list it as a major difference? Why do you disagree that the same skills used in Mt. Biking is applicable to riding a dirtbike? Double talk, son. Make up your mind. Quote:Thats a lot of gears. Dirt bike riding also involves thinking. Sometimes.Im sure it does, I wouldnt doubt that and I didnt say that it doesnt require thinking. You are the one claiming that riding dirt bikes requires some higher degree of mental ability, which is flat out wrong. Evan (for lack of a better name) Wrote:For the same reason that starting off driving a slower car on track will make you a better driver, mt. biking will make you a better motorcycle rider. Quote:Most definitely. So you agree that the skills translate....but just a few posts ago you disagreed with mike....... which is it? Quote:If so, what was your experience coming from mountain biking? (rather than just a tirade about how wicked awesome mountain biking is)Now you are the one missing the point. I give not one shit about convincing anyone mountain biking is "wickedly awesome", and somehow you have interpreted my counter-points to your explanation of how skills do not translate in any form, to be some exclamation of the superiority of mt. biking. So maybe you should re-read what someone else writes before you try to tell them about reading comprehension. Evan -who is amazed by people who cannot see the similarities between a bike with a motor, and a bike without. - ScottyB - 04-15-2005 this thread is getting lame - JohnC - 04-15-2005 Nice try Evan, putting words in my mouth (keyboard?). Where have I said that the skills don't translate? Nowhere. I disagreed with Mike because I felt he was oversimplifying. Dirt bike riding != mountain bike riding. And then I gave a brief explanation of what was *very* different, in my experience. And then you went all stupid :? And you still haven't answered my question. Have you ever ridden a dirt bike? And Scotty, how dare you call this thread lame. This is off-topicness and jackassery in the finest tradition of the MM forum. You should be ashamed  - Mike - 04-15-2005 mah bawls itch. when can i ride a dirt bike? - ScottyB - 04-16-2005 JohnC Wrote:And Scotty, how dare you call this thread lame. This is off-topicness and jackassery in the finest tradition of the MM forum. You should be ashamed  forgive me J. i forgot myself  - .RJ - 04-16-2005 wheeeeeeeee! mtn biking is t3h win! useless post for me...... because I havent ended up on my lid yet this year! - G.Irish - 04-16-2005 I'm taking bets on who in MM is going to get hurt on a dirt bike first. Here are the odds: Mike: 3/2 RJ: 2/1 Me: 2/1 Evan: 3/1 John: 7/2 No one is arguing that the skills don't transfer, I imagine Evan will pick it up the fastest being the most into downhill mtn biking. However, the motor skills with a dirt bike involve a few more than those you'd be using with pedal power. Throttle control (or lack thereof) is probably going to be the cause of the first crash. Either that, or a bad landing . - .RJ - 04-16-2005 If there's another bike within eyeshot.... i say my odds of crashing go up dramatically. - Mike - 04-16-2005 G.Irish Wrote:I imagine Evan will pick it up the fastest being the most into downhill mtn biking. You are aware that I worked at a bike shop for four summers in college, no? ![]() my vote is bad landing or front wheel in a rut = first crash. - JohnC - 04-16-2005 G.Irish Wrote:John: 7/2 Those are the odds for me to get hurt *again*, right? G.Irish Wrote:Throttle control (or lack thereof) is probably going to be the cause of the first crash. Either that, or a bad landing My money would be on throttle control. I've taken a few jumps (no more than 3-4ft of air) and haven't bombed the landings just yet. I'm sure it'll happen soon though. Dammit Gerald, now you've got me all motivated to fix the dirtbike again... - Maengelito - 04-16-2005 put a snail on it and call 9-1 and when i say so, dial 1 again! - .RJ - 04-16-2005 Mike Wrote:G.Irish Wrote:I imagine Evan will pick it up the fastest being the most into downhill mtn biking. - Mike - 04-17-2005 you're right, people who work in bike shops don't actually ride bikes. and to think i was trying to sneak one past y'all! - Evan - 04-17-2005 this thread has much retardation ps- several of the pro riders who lived in harrisonburg worked at the local bike shops. - Mike - 04-17-2005 yeah, some very good riders in the burg. some call it the capital of east coast riding. - Dragon - 04-18-2005 Oh no, I'm so screwed, my coworker at Allsports just upgraded to a Yamaha 125, and is now planning on parting with this lil guy. Must resist, must resist! ![]()
- G.Irish - 04-18-2005 How much he want? - Mike - 04-18-2005 is that an adult-sized bike? looks small in the pics. and yes, how much does he want? - Dragon - 04-18-2005 Yes, an adult sized bike, I can sit on it and flat foot both sides. He says $1600, I think that's a lil pricey myself. - .RJ - 04-18-2005 $100 and a case of my avatar. |
