Got quotes from a ton of places last night. Gieco is offering 110 a month and Nationwide is at 130.
Anyone have either one?
Also, I think it wouldn't be a problem to leave the Miata at my house. If I ever want to go to VIR, we pass right by my home town on the way from Harrisonburg. And I can just drive back as soon as the snow is gone in the spring and leave my truck at home until move out day.
I also wheel like 45 minutes from my house, so I can always grab my truck at home and drive to where I wheel.

Do you not have any credit? Credit score makes a big difference on insurance premiums, at least with my company. The insurance on my evo dropped about 400 bucks just from the difference in my credit score from the car loan.

Yes I only have one car at school and it's almost never the fun one.
If you are going to put your miata on vir, it'll need at bare minimum a roll bar which means you're already looking at mods before you buy. Just something to think about. And Yes, I know many will come with roll bars but It could not and then it would be another cost.

I wish I would have left my truck stock in high school. And I wish i would have bought one nice reliable car or one driveable project car while in college and slowly fixed it up/modded it. Having some extra spending money is a great feeling. Living paycheck to paycheck or in my case paycheck to about 5 days before paycheck really sucks because you basically sit there for those five days and try not to think because it may put you in the red. Having more than one car at school is a very fast way to get yourself there if your not careful.

No, you're saying exactly what I need to hear. I don't want to get too excited and make a dumb decision. I don't plan on this Miata being a "project car" right away. I just want something to drive that's more fun than a truck. I'm sure I'll mod it, but I don't think I'll be forced to mod it.
Hopefully I can average $300 a week for the 15 weeks we have off, I can make over 4000 over the summer. Of course, I'll have expenses, but I should be able to stash away some and work out my budget from there.
I don't even have the money yet, so I have time to think it over.

My parents have been with Geico for over 20 years, and I split off of their policy a few years back and also hold mine with Geico. Their pricing has been very fair (cheapest quote to insure the FoST, by far, when I had it) and while I've only had to make one claim, they handled it quickly/easily.
$110 a month is pretty good for your age. Is that including a liability-only Miata, or not? I'm at like $580/6-months for full coverage on the 128i and liability on the M.

For my Mazda I'm getting about $107-110 a month with Geico when I looked online that's 50k/100k/50k, 500 deductibles, 900 rental. They are cheapest I can find as well so I think that would be your best bet. I've looked through 8 different companies for insurance too as I'm about to be paying for my insurance in full.

My aunt, who is an insurance agent, said GMAC typically gives better rates than most for young males. Might be worth it to check with them. I'm using them for full coverage on both cars for about 1400/year I think.

That's for the truck alone. I figured I could snag 50 a month for the Miata. My mom is really against Gieco, and it's titled under her name, so I'm pretty sure I need her signature or something.

I don't know, that seems like way too much for someone with no tickets, a 10 year old Toyota Tacoma (no offense, but its not like Tacomas are rare or expensive), and thats garaged in Harrisonburg. And if you're on your parents' plan, I assume its also part of a multi-car discount. Something just ain't right...

I have never understood how you always manage to pay so little for car insurance, despite only having liability on the one car. I'm paying $1183/6-months for full coverage on both cars with 100/300/100k liability limits and $500 deductibles.

I made a similar mistake and stretched my means, even dumber, on just one car. I loved the car but, looking back, it was totally not worth it. If you don't have it now, and the only way you can see it happening is by everything rolling juuuusssttt right, then I would suggest you just pocket it. I promise you won't regret it later.

If you really do this. Plan to do well in school... You need those grades to get a good job if you are stretching your funds doing this. Honestly, maybe keep saving. Wait a year or so when you are solid in the green then go ahead and do it. If you can wait that's what I would do.

its a $3,000 car. miatas are stupid reliable, need very little work to be a track/fun car, and last I heard, tacomas are known to be pretty damn reliable too
a $3k car and an old truck is not the recipe for financial ruin. not even close.

I honestly think I can do it.
After it's all said and done and I buy it. The only regular expense added is 50-100 a month for extra insurance.
We'll see once I start serving regularly. Hopefully I can average about $15 an hour here at home, considering it's one of the busiest Cracker Barrels in VA.
The one in Harrisonburg is another story...

Just got my insurance dropped to $330 every quarter. Hell yes. So even with a miata, it'd still be cheaper than before.
