Well, now that you bought that chest protector it might nott matter but don't buy a cotton jersey. Synthetic is superior and you definitely wanna feel like you're not wearing any shirt in the woods for 2 hours. Vintage guys are crazy about cotton jerseys but they are so much hotter.

Also, I prefer the full goggle tear offs to the string kind. I have both. I stack the full goggle tear offs around 8 deep and use them wisely and it's plenty for a full race even after a good rain.

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - Sully - 07-17-2013

I had string kind back in the day and liked them when they worked. Then problem is, if anything gets between the lens and the roll, you are kinda screwed. They also only clear a 1 inch strip of goggle usually , depending on make, and maybe its better nowadays but I believe regular tearoffs are usually most of the lens surface.

I should really talk to you guys, cause I just barely know what I'm doing. Some experience would be helpful.

Yeah the jersey won't much matter, but thank you. I'll be wearing it over this suit of armor. Which, by the way, came in the other day and I really like it. It's a lot lighter weight than I expected and once it's on I barely notice it. I do feel like starting a fight though.
I'll probably be wearing a very lightweight shirt under the armor jacket though, so would you say synthetic is the way to go there?

As far as the goggles go, I did just get some fairly cheap ones that have regular tear-offs available. So they should work, and I got lucky I guess that the fitment with the helmet I got is decent.

What do you guys think about pants? That's the only thing I haven't got yet. Well, I *thought* I did, ordered some on closeout, but I guess they had a miscount and didn't have any to ship.
So is something like this approprite? Necessary?

I'm pretty tempted to just try jeans for starting out. And I've got a lot of practice to do anyway, so there's no rush. I'm 95% sure they will become uncomfortable if I'm really going to be on the bike for over an hour though.

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - Sully - 07-18-2013

Jeans would probably be ok but I also ride a street bike in jeans and I'm sure there a people against that. I always liked my MX pants (Thor is just or was just my goto brand). they provide a little padding on the hips (not a lot but better than jeans) and they are thick and tough feeling(like I wouldn't worry about much tearing through them in most impacts. Mine are almost 10 years old so idk what they are like now but mine also have leather in the spots where they would be exposes to engine heat like the side of the calf's. And they have thick rubber decorative logos in smart places like the knees for a little more protection. They nay even have the rubber by the tailbone area. They are definitely designed to be worn with a high trail or MX boot. I dont remember if you said you got those or not but definitely get some. They give you a lot of support and would prevent most ankle injuries from low speed falls. (Probably most high speed too)

Edit: the MX pants also fill in the space in the boot to prevent chafing, no need for long socks.

I think I'll try jeans. I'm not so concerned with the safety aspect, I did get some boots and knee gaurds, I'm just concerned about them from a comfort aspect.
Actually at this point, I'm more concerned with how to shift with these boots on. :dunno:

It makes it easier to be honest. It is hard to walk though.

The MX pants run a tad cooler than jeans.

rode around in my yard a little bit, bike is ready to go, rider needs a lot of practice.

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - BLINGMW - 08-19-2013

A week ago, sunday, I went out to my friend's place in botetourt to run around with him and another guy. Only took me about 30 min to lock the front brake, half-highside the thing, flip and break my right pinky finger!
After my vision recovered, a decent rest and a beer, I rode around for maybe another 2 "sessions". Doc monday said it was a clean break and it should recover nicely. I guess I'll add this cost to my bike spreadsheet. :dunno:
Anyway, it was pretty super fun and I was amazed at how much terrain the bike can handle. And I was really happy with the bike, it seems to be running great and everything working fine. I might even change the oil. I found a lot of relevant practice terrain, as well as some haybails to slalom through, and just kept running through it all until I was beat. My sore legs hurt way more by tuesday than my hand.
I know, most of you guys are 3+ hrs from me, but would anyone like to join me at Phelps Farm for practice and fun soon?

I'll certianly host and we'll make a day of it. Just tell me if you're interested and we'll pick a date. Or if there's something in c'ville or harrisonburg, I'll meet you there.
And/or if you want to do an event, I'm shooting for 9/29 in Chatham VA with VCHSS. I should be able to get in another practice day or two by then.

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - G.Irish - 08-20-2013

I'd be interested but I no have mud bike =(

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - BLINGMW - 09-23-2013

Ok, 9/29 Chatham VA with VCHSS is a go, anyone else want to try? Or come spectate / laugh?

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - BLINGMW - 09-30-2013

Well *THAT* sucked. I would say I was dangerously underprepared and very much underestimated the skill required to do this safely, even at a slow pace. I'm just glad I didn't severely hurt myself or knock anyone off the course, though right now I feel like I lost a fight, and my bike looks like it was run over by a truck. I think I am cured of my desire for competition motorcycle riding.
I talked my friend Brad into going, here's us, 9F and 11F (I'm standing in the background stretching)

As you can see, we REALLY kicked ass. 143rd and 146th out of 149 bikes that started.
An 88 minute 2nd lap seems odd you say? Well, that's what happens when you get too weak to pick up the bike and turn it around in a timely fashion, are pretty much in 1st gear the whole way, give up and sit down to spectate for 10 min or so when you just cannot fathom getting back on the bike.

BLINGMW Wrote:give up and sit down to spectate for 10 min or so
 fantastic. sounds like it would have been super fun in the depths of summer. or not!

was it exhaustion from trying to keep on the pace or was the course just brutal? was the bike competitive when you were first out there, before your body fell apart and what not? just curious if a better bike would have actually done anything or if its just a matter of conditioning.

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - BLINGMW - 10-01-2013

I would say it was
75% due to lack of skill and experience on the wild variety of terrain. Decending rutted, root covered, tree infested hills that were so steep I couldn't control my speed was my least favorite.
20% being out of shape
5% bike
The bike did awesome, the only thing I can complain about is the weight. After picking it up 10+ times or trying to turn it around in place, having it be 30+ lbs lighter like a newer KTM would have been nice. We half joke that a 150 would be perfect since it's even lighter and would fit between trees. That being said, no teen or adult is riding those and all the fast guys are on grown-up bikes, so I doubt we're "on to" anything there. You'd also need to do some suspension work on a 150 to get the clearance and suspension travel up. Either way, I have to think 4-stroke and electric start is a good call for a beginner, but then again, looking at the field, I'm in the vast minority there too.
And I don't *think* being out of shape would be such a huge problem if I could keep moving and not hit everything. Going slower turned out meaning I had to fight more and the bike doesn't help keep itself up.
Oh, I forgot to mention and/or appreciate that I was actually pretty happy with my personal gear. Jeans are just fine. The armor vest is sweet over a rather revealing long sleeve "warm gear" Under-Armour shirt. Boots, knee guards, I was happy to have it all on. If it was 90 deg out, maybe not so much. :dunno:

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - davej - 10-02-2013

hey, at least you're out there riding, not at work or changing diapers, so i'm still jealous.

i bet a few more events and you'll turn consistent lap times in under an hour.

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - G.Irish - 10-02-2013

I found when I started turning up the pace at track days/racing I used up a lot of energy because I wasn't efficient with my body movement. As I got better I found I could run a faster pace far more easily. I think once you guy some experience with the terrain it'll get a lot easier.

Re: Here's a thing to try? Hare Scrambles. - xvxax - 10-03-2013

That's really true. When I am being chased hard or on the first lap, I have to fight really hard not to tense up. If I get tense, I get exhausted within 20 minutes or less. The key to lasting is honestly being as smooth as possible and just maximizing speed with minimizing body movement and staying relaxed and loose. If you thrash like it's a motocross and slam the brakes on every turn and power out like crazy you're going to get tired. 2nd most important thing to remember is probably looking ahead and analyzing the course because courses in the mid-atlantic are always muddy and slipping around is fatiguing too.

Ride some more trails and get the hang of it first.
