Does not apply to the hatchback focus, but on a "3-box" sedan/coupe
there is a good deal of aerodynamic turbulence caused by the sharp dropoff of the trunk to the rear glass. This creates a large amount of drag directly over the trunk area. A large rear wing will "catch" that air and give it something to "stick" to, smoothing out the airflow and decreasing drag.

no use for a rear wing that won't hold on anyways.

i'm really not sure what feersty is saying either

the ford focus is front wheel drive(FWD) so why does it need a wing over the rear wheels? That is probably attached to the rear glass with glue at best?????????

is there any downforce needed on rear wheels that are not on the powertrain?

There's probably better pics out there, but yes, FWD cars can and do benefit from a rear wing on track.

- Feersty - 09-24-2004

alrighty then.

- Mike - 09-24-2004

and it might have reinforcements that protrude through the glass and to the chassis... we really can't tell from that picture.

petey, you can't talk smack until your car runs (I probably shouldn't be pointing this out considering my recent past).
I imagine all of those race cars have rear wings to change the air flow characteristics of the stock car so that there is less drag holding the car back.
