Most of our careers are in technology, so it seems fairly relevant.

I tried not to get too technical. Long story, short: programmer recruitment is an utter shitshow especially for positions beyond entry level. It's pretty well known but I assumed it was mostly a west coast start-up/Google/Amazon/Microsoft thing but it appears to have spread quite far now.

It's real. We briefly entertained the idea of moving to Portland, but nixed it because the market isn't nearly as good as Seattle. Even if I worked remote, my options are lesser should I decide I wanted a new job.

Something like that. Then he found a contract job and didn't have shit like health insurance (I'm pretty sure) for awhile. Then he went full time with that company and got laid off in less than a year.

Part of that is because he prefers to work for small companies, but there are only a few big employers in the city. Everyone I know that's moved there, besides him, has ended up at Nike.

This is so surprising.  The job market for tech talent is so tight that I'd hire you on the spot based on the personal projects you described.
They must somehow have the luxury of a ton of entry level devs from UVA,  with enough mids and seniors entrenched to properly mentor them.

Take it as a learning experience.  Algo questions are very common for any tech interview,  and a whiteboard exercise or two as well.   And even if your current job doesnt use them,  make sure you keep at least basic familiarity on the industry standard stuff like git, aws, jenkins, jira, etc.

That must be how people here are affording $1M houses, I guess.

In the mean time I'm happy with my stable job, 2 mile commute and 40 hr work week.

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well. They have a REALLY high rating on Glassdoor and I doubt there's much real competition for them. Time to brush up on some leetcode exercises, put a few apps on GitHub and take this search nationwide.

I only give it to RJ as he is the originator of the "MOVE OUT OF NOVA!!" But never did it so basically I will give him grief forever.
