Re: 2009 Audi A4 Avant - Mike - 03-29-2016

But with new pistons, it's like a new car! What could go wrong/why wouldn't we keep it forever? LOL.

I also ended up buying that 4-pack of painted rear sensor that someone had linked from Ireland.came out to like $50/sensor shipped and factory painted. Could probably profit by selling the other three I don't need [yet].

Re: 2009 Audi A4 Avant - Beej - 03-29-2016

How are we not talking about the piston replacement? Like, engine piston, right? Makes the boom? Jesus.

Is this a common thing?

Re: 2009 Audi A4 Avant - Mike - 03-29-2016

yep, pretty common. one thing i read said the factory actually installed incorrectly sized rings on A LOT of cars. inside information or something.

Re: 2009 Audi A4 Avant - Apoc - 03-29-2016

Seriously though, at what point do you actually get rid of that damn thing?

Re: 2009 Audi A4 Avant - ViPER1313 - 03-29-2016

Yea, let's take the entire engine apart and re-assemble it, that is a guaranteed way to make it more reliable. Waiting for all the subsequent "x is leaking" "y is banging around" "z is shorting out" posts.

Re: 2009 Audi A4 Avant - .RJ - 03-29-2016

Timing chain tensioners? The 2.0T motors use a timing belt... right? Mine does.

Confusedhrug: will have a one year warranty on the work. Would expect anything to arise in that time.

They switched to chain in mid-2008.

When money out of pocket exceeds cost to replace. I don't really dig the options for our current monthly payment right now. We have an All-Road loaner and it's pretty "meh." Hardly different from our 8 year old car except it's a few inches higher and that's awkwardly apparent in the handling. Parking sensor is the first out of pocket cost that's not maintenance and I stand to actually make money on that.

Wait a year and order this.

Re: 2009 Audi A4 Avant - Mike - 03-30-2016

you think at a year old i'll be able to get one for $375/mo with 0 down? seems 4-5 years old is the sweet spot for me getting a nice car at what i want to pay.

although there's this: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://jalopnik.com/heres-what-to-do-if-you-cant-afford-a-2017-volvo-v90-1758700992">http://jalopnik.com/heres-what-to-do-if ... 1758700992</a><!-- m -->

At that point it's too late; you have to pay twice - once to repair and again to replace.

Surprised you have a car payment on an 8 y/o car when it's your only car.

There are plenty of V60s going for mid-20s these days. Even with a modest trade in, you're at the same payment.

Re: 2009 Audi A4 Avant - Mike - 03-30-2016

the a4 is more car than the v60. it'd be a downgrade (smaller, a little ugly from some angles, fwd, less prestigious [lol kidding kind of]) and would start a new loan. ultimately, it probably comes down to me thinking it's a good looking car until i do a full 360 of it. something just doesn't tickle me about it.

if my bank is going to hand me $23k at 2% over five years, i'm going to take it.

Not if you discount for all the times it's in the shop.

You're generally a reasonable person. It's hard to believe you don't see the impending doom of a total out of pocket more than if you re-upped now.

yup. i've always been picky/patient to a fault when it comes to buying cars and it's worked out pretty well (so i guess not to a fault?). happened to get a lemon this time around, but it's still a fantastic driving car for what we paid and again, pretty much warranty repairs so not too big a deal.

Conservative estimate for Audi (repairs only) in years 9-11 is $6900 (I did the math using a 2010 - two years newer than yours).

Years 2-4 for Volvo is $800.

If you go to 5 years, it's roughly $12k to $4.5k.

But does the Volvo have memory seats?
