Wait, where we discussing group chat vs forum?
GroupChat is for quick discussions and organization. No one is going to post on the forum asking who wants to eat lunch together, or who has tool X and can come help real quick. Groupchat is for regular conversation like when we were cheering on Brandon eating 8lbs of pizza. Sure, the pictures will go on the forum later, but there's no place on the forum for that.
You absolutely CAN NOT get mad at students for not coming to the forum if you aren't willing to try the groupchat. It goes BOTH ways. I see more comrarderie now in MM than I have in my 5 years in the club and it's beautiful. The groupchat plays a large part in that.
That said, if you join, you're joining our AluMMni chat, which is meant to keep us from steamrolling the student conversation.

after joining the GroupMe chat, i see where the main differences are. it's essential to mute it so your phone doesn't blow up, but it's more personal. There is definitely a place for the forums for searchable content and topic-based discussion, but as far as i know most of the OT discussions take place in almost all threads, haha.

Dave pestered me so I installed this app but deleted it as it seemed to want access to everything, contacts, phone calls, two factor authentication to link to my phone #. Nope.
