1999 BMW M3 - Hellrot on Black 138k Miles $14k - davej - 12-28-2017 Congrats on the sale, I'm glad it'll be closer now for me to get when the current owner is done with it. I bought my e36 for a "deal" and it was the hellrot car from hell. I see you guys finding these deals, and just wonder what you do differently. I never even see those cars listings. Like I know my excitement to get a "nice" sports car blinded me on my first m3 and I would definitely walk away if i looked at that car today. I know it's irrelevant to the thread since DJ has sold the car, BUT.... Some of us (including myself) don't ask for enough when buying a car. We think the price is fair (or close to), and we don't want to upset the owner because we really like the car, and have already sold ourselves on owning the car. I believe the number one thing that most people do to get that "great deal" is ask. Ask for the ludicrous deal, AND have the control to walk away, if the price is that absurd. 1999 BMW M3 - Hellrot on Black 138k Miles $14k - Senor_Taylor - 01-02-2018 Like that time I offered DJ $50 for two race seats. He said no. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk 1999 BMW M3 - Hellrot on Black 138k Miles $14k - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-02-2018 Funny since I got burned on this car. Some day when I’ve had enough drinks I’ll tell ya. First car I’ve lost money on in a while. They seem to be going for big money in condition like this one so I am a little surprised to hear that. 1999 BMW M3 - Hellrot on Black 138k Miles $14k - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-03-2018 Nope, was fairly priced. Ended up this “clean title” car wasn’t so clean. TN has funky rules for older cars that allowed it to have a free and clear title despite an insurance total loss. Real odd too since none of the frame rails up front are touched which is one of the first things I check. Might have been a lazy insurance since these things were only worth KBB $6k in the year it had the accident but still blows my mind. I debated holding onto it instead of selling but I need the room and am trying to get rid of stuff, not accumulate before a move. Did you run a check before buying it or took the sellers word for it (I seem to remember him being somebody important or something)? Did he know? Edit: Whoops. Tapatalk didn't load the last two replies. Wow, that sucks. TN has funky rules for older cars that allowed it to have a free and clear title despite an insurance total loss. My white E36 was like that. I forget all of the details now, but it had a clean Maryland title when I bought it. I didn't bother with a Carfax because it was 20 years old, a visual inspection tells a lot more, and I paid $2500 with about 110k miles on the clock so who cares. Finally ran the report and it showed a total loss a few years before I bought the car. Closer inspection revealed it had been damaged all down the driver's side. I can't remember if any front-left body panels were replaced but the driver's rear fender was definitely replaced and somewhat poorly. I never figured out the source of my SRS light issues and I suspect the impact/repair fucked up a few things related to that and the power top (which worked because I halfassed some wiring). Driving it through floodwater in the OBX earned it the second and final "total loss" designation. Live and learn. Both your red M3 and my white 328 were nice to look at and drove well, which has always mattered most IMO. RE: 1999 BMW M3 - Hellrot on Black 138k Miles $14k - WRXtranceformed - 01-03-2018 My brother bought a CPO E9x M3 from a DC-area BMW dealer that turned out to have been stolen in the past. Somehow it didn't show up on CARFAX but the next buyer found out through some deeper search. Needless to say he went and had an unpleasant conversation with that dealer after the fact. RE: 1999 BMW M3 - Hellrot on Black 138k Miles $14k - Steve85 - 01-03-2018 I wonder if anyone has ever made a successful claim on their "guarantee"? https://www.carfax.com/manifest/bbg/termsConditions.cfx RE: 1999 BMW M3 - Hellrot on Black 138k Miles $14k - Scott - 01-03-2018 (01-03-2018, 10:50 AM)Sully Wrote: What year was it? Did you run a check before buying it or took the sellers word for it (I seem to remember him being somebody important or something)? Did he know? As the person who bought DJ's M3 and showed him the Carfax, I can answer that. The loss was reported in 2013, and they weren't worth a lot at that point. When we first started talking about the car, we both knew it had been repainted and the hood/fenders were not OEM, which after almost 20 years, isn't a huge surprise or a big deal, especially for a red car. It was only after we made a deal on the car and I sent the VIN to my "collectors" car insurance company to insure it at an agreed value (like several of my "special" cars), did they call me back with the report and a large adjustment on what they would insure it for. What's strange is that the Carfax doesn't show an accident report, only it was declared a total loss. DJ was mislead by the previous owner, and I paid a little more than some others with "history", but what I got was a very nice car in great mechanical condition that I am not afraid to drive and put miles on at this point. It has a nice warm spot in the garage and will be enjoyed. 1999 BMW M3 - Hellrot on Black 138k Miles $14k - Sully - 01-03-2018 Hmm that sucks the dude mislead him. I thought I remember a picture of dj with the dude saying he was like some sort of semi famous person in the car or BMW world. I mean maybe it was a theft and light front end damage. I think insurance companies try to total stolen cars whenever they can.
