yes, except the dealer's markup isn't market price either.

When I was FlexShopping, I was in deep negotiations with a dealer on a used one. Not even a new one, but a used one. So he had a line on one and proceeds to pull the following:

"So this is book retail, this is what it's going to cost me to run it through CPO, and then this is the market adjustment..."

Whoa whoa, hol' up. You just gonna tell me "Yeah, this right here is where I'm gonna make my next boat payment"? His right to do, of course. But then the price came out to be 7k more than the one I bought...with fewer miles. I'm not gonna just give you 7 grand because you've got a good handshake. So the "market adjustment" wasn't really, if I could get the same car 7k less?

Had to deal with the same bullshit when I went WRX shopping. "Oh but this car is rare blah blah blah so we marked it up 10%" Ok that's nice, I'll pay MSRP and not a dime over. "Well I just can't help you, then." Cue me rolling up in an STI instead of a WRX for the same money.

Had the same issue when shopping for my Ralliart.

"Hey I can get this car for way cheaper if I just drive 300 miles but I'd rather not, let's make a deal"
"But, SIR this is a super ultra rare 2011 RALLIART. I assure it's worth every dime."
"Did ... you not listen to a word I said? It's not even an EVO what are you smoking?"

Bought a 2013 with a 1/4 of the miles for like $3,000 more because it was the slowest car on their lot and they actually wanted to move it.

ha... If you get a Porsche Allotment I hope you are using your marketing credentials. Joe Blow can't get one..

G if you are serious and want to explore this I have a friend in sales at Porsche of Towson who may be able to at least shine some light on how the allocation process works. Let me know.

Once I'm on the glide path with a new house I'll have to take you up on that.

Fuck these pompous assholes. The arrogance of rich people to complain that their cars are going to be undervalued because a company decides to give people what they want (manual transmission) is insane.

Ah yes. Waiting for the next episode of rich people problems

Man no joke, on the GT3 forum on Rennlist users post more about the value of the cars than actually driving them. It's fucking weird, like winning the game is about winning on resale value. Which I suppose is an easier game to win than winning the track day :dunno:

A lot of McLaren guys were bitching too when McLaren decided to release the 675LT Spider. McLaren originally said 500 675LT's, but then made another 500 units for the Spider. Lots of complaints of, 'They lied to us!' I'm kinda like, well they only made 500 coupes, they didn't really lie.

I think for some of those guys there's a big ego boost in having something rare, along with the allure of resale value. Finding out what they bought isn't so rare can be deflating.

In other news, my prospects for getting my hands on a GT car may be improving.

How is this different than people who always talk about resale value of their house?

I don't think conceptually they are much different but the allure of buying a house is to be able to build equity and get tax benefits and a lot of people do this....versus the number of people buying brand new cars just to have something that is going to appreciate in value eventually, someday being very very low. In other words, houses are sold with those things as benefits to the purchase, *new* cars are sold as transportation or as a fun toy not something that is going to make you money.

The big exception to this (notice *new* cars being emphasized) is when guys buy rare restored classic cars or buy older, beat up classics and restore them for profit.

Re: Everything is Amazing, But You Can't Fucking Buy It - Apoc - 05-26-2017

What about people who buy property as investments? I mean, I get we're all car guys and like it when cars are driven, but I'm not sure why we judge people who use cars as investments any different than any other asset.

Yeah real estate investors are just focusing 100% on that benefit of owning property vs. caring at all about having the home for their own use. It's just odd for people to look at new cars in terms of speculation because 1) nobody does it and 2) there's a lot less you can control in terms of more being produced. Don't get butt hurt when demand dictates a company builds more cars when they are still capable of doing so.

That's the allure of classic car investing I think. Only so many were made, in certain option / color combos, etc. and they aren't making them anymore...so the market is going to hinge on other intangibles instead of changing production numbers

I dunno, I've never been on a forum where people posted ad nauseum about their home value.

I'm not bagging on them for buying a car as an investment. That's their prerogative. But to buy a car in 2017 under the assumption it would be rare and then to bitch about the resale value because porsche makes another car that might effect the value of your car is just stupid. If it was truly an investment then you win some you lose some like any other investment. At least you have a fantastic car at the end of the day.

I've never heard anything but horrible things about this website. I'm afraid to read what they say about my neighborhood.

its mostly a soundboard for bored, pedantic NIMBY moms and people trying to plug their friends' businesses.

its vaguely useful as a selling tool, like a suburban craigslist, if you have furniture or kids stuff.

In Seattle, it's highly politically charged. They do an okay job keeping non-local topics moderated, but there's a lot of rich white folks complaining about taxes, city council, and the lack of police presence. Also, the dramatic rise in gun violence... we've had four gun deaths YTD. I had to suspend my account a few months ago because it was making me agro to interact with the folks there.
