Why? If they're worth the same price? Arguably an M3 is more valuable than a 335gt. I'm honestly embarrassed to see someone talking about buying an E46 M3 as a beater.

I had a MKIV Supra and then a Corvette while at JMU and didn't really have any problems. The Corvette got the rear bumper keyed once, but the asshat keyed every car parked in that row. Mike D had a pretty expensive Mercedes too that I don't think was ever messed with.

My WRX got keyed on every quarter panel, hood and trunk, but I also lived in Hunters Ridge aka the ghetto. To be honest, you run the risk with any car getting keyed with that many drunk dum dums around. I used to park my STi at Aaron's parents' house outside of town if anyone remembers.

I also like the C5 Z06 idea.

New idea: After further consideration and discussions with the old ones, I might have come to a realization. The GT is a great dd and with a warranty until the end of college, it's probably the best main car to have right now. Still going to try and go into the dealer and see what they say, but decided that a second cheaper car would be better. Since any BMW is going to need money as soon as I get it(mainly E46) I am thinking of an E46 330 to save money initially and have more to spend on subframe, bushings, cooling, etc. Thoughts? This puts me in the $5k range for the car, not opposed to other ideas in that range

Remember the $10,000 rule for E46s. You won't save money by buying a cheap one.

Miata really is the only "real" answer for a cheap second car that you're not going to waste time on.

You spend time working on the car that would have been time driving your car, doing homework, or having friends because your expectations are too high for the car you're buying.

"Shoot for the moon and you'll land among the stars" except the moon is a nice car for cheap, and the stars are the parts of your car spread out in the grace Street apartments parking lot and you're crying.

Alternate idea... just up your comprehensive coverage to $250 or $100 if you are scared of the unexpected expense of it getting keyed. Or just consider a $500 / $1000 repaint a possible maintenance expense (whatever your current deductible is)

But, if you want my brutally honest opinion.... it's a stock BMW 3 series wagon hatch cuv thing. Your average person, even the drunk college hater type, is unlikely to single it out. It's not a 911 or f-car. Just drive on.

Inconspicuous performance is a good thing sometimes.

Those two things indicate that you don't really want to roll with a E46 M3 right now.

what he said. they're cool cars, but they will require your time, money, and energy to own...potentially a lot of each category, even if you buy one well.

there are a vast number of other really fun cars to own that are far less of a headache and will allow you to enjoy motorsports with a lot less stress at this stage of your life. the 330 is a good example of this.
