Consumer Reports isn't *quite* as hard on them, but wow ok, I rescind my recommendation as it was admittedly based on our rather pleasant ownership of one (an '03 maybe) years ago. It didn't even leave us stranded when I ran over a truck tire, which hit the front hard enough to bend the AC condenser. That's two of us. Seems like ideal use case. Maybe too raw for a DAILY driver, but sure beats having it sit around on a battery tender, taking up space.

So you want a small, reasonably lightweight and fun to drive car that has a torquey motor, 3 pedals and reasonable storage space. Something like a Miata or a Prius or Smart car is out, then.

My short list:

- Later model Civic Si. Those are supposed to drive pretty nice, and Honda reliable.
- 5th/6th gen VW GTi. Before errybody goes all vw hater they are pretty reliable cars now, and lots of fun to drive. Only downside I see is that its too similar to the Mini you already own.
- 350z - why not? You dont rate gas mileage as primary concern.
- BRZ/FRS - out of budget but could probably find one that's taken the initial depreciation hit
- Volvo C30 or S40 - no idea if they are reliable or within budget

Hey at least I didn't suggest it.

(If you actually want to know anything about a MKV PM/Facebook me, now that the MKVII is out the MKVs are well within your price range (MKVIs are still high-teens low-20s), but I can tell you right now it won't be "zero" maintenance.)

I've done it for 1.5 years and it was okay. It's manual steering and the clutch is tougher than my 944, which makes for terrible parallel parking in the second hilliest city in the nation and isn't great in a city setting (we in the city, not the burbs). It also has ZERO climate control (read: defogging capabilities), which is fine during the summer months but is terrible when it's dark and moist for six months. I literally use one of those defogging shammy wipe things every 10 minutes on my commute come in the winter and it's impossible to see out the rear window. There are other smaller things that add up, but none worth calling out.

To clarify, I'm likely looking for automatic.

FYI - You could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Get something you don't hate. Rex doesn't hate his Prius, so that is an option, but I have driven one; I hate it. I guess that is why different cars are made for different people.

VW w/ the DSG would go to the top of my list, then. The interior, torque and fun to drive factor would outweigh any maintenance costs for me.... but i'm a retard that just bought an 8 year old Audi to daily drive.
