- Mike - 10-20-2007 just picked up a tender at a flea market for $10. results available this evening. - Mike - 10-20-2007 i couldn't wait 5 hours... and... great success! - Apoc - 10-20-2007 Please say Andrew wasn't right. - Ginger - 10-20-2007 About what? I told him to get a Tender weeks ago. - Mike - 10-20-2007 Apoc Wrote:Please say Andrew wasn't right. :?: of course he was, the battery was pretty damned new, but dead. 98% chance it just needed a charge. went for a trip to the store... conked out at one stoplight; need to increase the idle. - Ginger - 10-20-2007 If you'd like, I can take a look at the whole charging system.. we could even wire in a voltmeter to make sure you can actually see when the bike is getting a real charge. - Mike - 10-20-2007 really not worth the effort. i plan on selling the bike as soon as i have the remaining parts. in the meantime, have no plans to do much real riding, but thanks. - Apoc - 11-09-2007 FWIW, I hadn't been on my SVS for like a month (but started it every other week) and despite riding it around for a half hour the battery showed less than 80% when I plugged it in. - Mike - 02-17-2008 so how do i adjust my idle? did a google, checked vfrd... no luck. - Ginger - 02-17-2008 There's usually a stop screw where the throttle cables meet the carbs. It's function is to limit the amount that the throttle cam is allowed to close. To find the cam, just follow the throttle cables to their termination; check there first. You may want to check your throttle cables for binding. Binding can be adjusted out at the grip or via barrel adjusters on the cables. If you make adjustments and nothing changes, you may want to pull off the airbox and look for obstructions. - Mike - 02-19-2008 so in what order should i check things? 1. cables 2. adjust stop screw 3. check airbox that's what i got from reading that. - Ginger - 02-19-2008 If your cables aren't binding, I'd start at the stop screw - Mike - 02-19-2008 yeah i don't think they're binding... they feel nice and smooth. the bike is idling at less than 1k. once it gets warm, it dies. - Ginger - 02-19-2008 From all the sitting it's been doing, it's feasible that the jets are clogging up, too. - ViPER1313 - 02-19-2008 Italian tune-up  - Mike - 03-11-2008 So I put some seafoam through the case and the gas tank. Let it idle with the choke on for about 15 minutes... At that point, it started getting hot so I took it for a bit of a spin. Turned the choke off after a quarter mile, rode about 5, idled at a few lights... All was good. It still feels like it wants to die when idling... Might have to reevaluate once the weather gets warm. No smoke like I was hoping for from the foamz

A good place to start is to set the carbs to the base settings provided in the service manual. If it's been sitting they will probably need to be cleaned at the very least, and maybe rebuilt. Never a bad idea to change plugs either. - Dave - 03-13-2008 Keep in mind that I know jack shit about bikes, but could there be a vacuum leak somewhere that might cause that? +1 on popping the carbs off and cleaning them. I learned a lot when I opened up one of the sets of carbs I bought for the Z. |
