The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 12-06-2018

Got to say I actually like my Vizio smart UI way better than the fire stick or fire TV or my dad's new Roku TCL TVs. I mean if you had a bunch of random apps, I could see it being annoying because you'd have to Chromecast them to it (Chromecast built in) but for the basics which is all I use like Netflix and Amazon, the new remotes have a button right on the top for them and the TV turns on to a screen with little boxes that I click to open an app. Don't see any issues with that? If it's a show I'm already watching, I just tell Google to watch "name of show" and she turns the TV on and launches the show.

My only complaint is my wife insists that the TV looks better in vivid picture mode and not calibrated

Sounds like a defective wife

I used the rtings calibration, and it made everything on my TV look like it was a great depression documentary.

Too dark, everything had crazy warm tones, maybe that's how it's supposed to look?

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 12-06-2018

That's what ours did when I followed all the recommendations from rtings and pretty much everywhere else. Even Vizio says to use the calibrated mode which is pretty much what rtings says with just minor tweaks. It definitely feels super muted and washed out but I just thought that made it more "real". I secretly thought it didn't look that great but figured the same thing. "guess that's just what it's"supposed"to look like". But wife always switched it to vivid so I just gave up.

Correct - you adjust really quickly and realize just how over saturated most TV's are out of the box.

The one thing i did change was from their WARM 2 Suggestion to WARM 1.

Anyone want a flip phone? Too bad the person demo'ing clearly has no clue about the phone. Someone asked about Memory and he started talking about storage capacity.

Interesting technology for sure.

Anyone buy a Pixel direct from Google's website? I'm trying to replace my Galaxy on VZW and would prefer to pick Unlocked over VZW during checkout, but I don't know if that'll still work on VZW.

It'll work.

RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sijray21 - 02-04-2019

i bought a pixel off the playstore in 2017, but i'm on t-mobile; it's worked out well so far. I even filed an insurance claim using Google's program and it turned out well. new(er) device, better battery life, speakers that work again, seems like a new phone. i'm very happy about that.

RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Apoc - 02-05-2019

Cool, thanks.

I got a 3XL on Fi for work as a fully managed device (i.e. they track everything) for the screen and battery. The phone's too big for an everyday phone, but I like the software a lot. We have two months left on our VZW S8s - I'm buying them out because I want to switch over to 3's and using the 3XL put me over the hump. My last work phone was a Nexus 5X on Fi, so this is a bit of a change. The cool thing is I can port my number over between the work phones. I got my Fi number via GrandCentral (before Google acquired it) back when I worked at AOL, so this is some kinda full circle shit.

RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sijray21 - 02-05-2019

yeah, i bought my wife the pixel 2 and i like that more than my 2xl. i'm definitely going for a smaller form factor when i replace my 2xl.

Pretty sure I'm going to go with the s10 a little while after it drops although I'm already pretty disappointed because it sounds like most the "new" tech won't be ready until the note comes out later in the year. I know they changed alot but it almost feels like this will be somewhat of a repeat of the s9 fiasco. Although I guess this time it's more because Samsung (or maybe just the people following the development) hinted at all these big things and then none of them made it into the phone.

I used to be so excited by phones - they're all the same now.  Marginally better camera every year maybe. It really just doesn't matter anymore.

We get new phones every two years. The software is generally somewhat better with decent features, like wireless charging, being added over time. The real reason we end up upgrading is because it seems like all batteries start to fall off at the 18 month mark. The feature I'm most excited about in moving from Galaxy to Pixel is the ability to text from my browser. I do this today with the Pushbullet app/plugin, but I refuse to pay for more than 100 texts/month.

RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - JPolen01 - 02-06-2019

What is the text from browser feature? Like texting through iMessage from a macbook? Andy paying for texts? That is still a thing? I thought every planw as unlimited texting.

I went to college so I didn't have to count my text messages.

Seriously though, I have unlimited everything for $30/month and iOS/Mac OS allow messaging sync natively. Super easy. Seems to be one area where Android continues to struggle (or demonstrate why the only brand worth buying is Google itself).

Yes. Samsung doesn't support it natively and I want it cross-platform as I'm using MacOS, Linux, ChromeOS, and Windows for home/work. I have a plugin in Chrome that syncs to a my phone. It's free to use, but capped at 100/month unless you subscribe. I've been using it for a few years and only hit the cap once because I use a lot of FB Messenger. My actual phone plan is unlimited everything, except data.

Google's version of android supports texting from browser natively.

Or, download the Google Messages app and you can do it too. I use it on my Samsung all the time.

Agreed on the battery shenanigans - i'd kill for replaceable batteries again.

I really wanted the new battery tech they talked about. Also don't like how they offer different tiers with different screen sizes. What if I want the larger one without the curve screen or vice versa. Idk. Just stupid little things but don't say you're pulling out all the stops cause this is the 10 year anniversary and then release a phone as new and modern as it is but missing a bunch of features that you'll literally be dropping later that year. Phones are too expensive to upgrade every year and I've never been a note fan.

Aren't they changing the text protocol from sms soon anyways so that all texts will be more like an imessage where you can see if people are typing and stuff?
