Back when I worked at the shop I would give customers rides back home or to work when they brought their cars in for service. I remember one woman saying I probably thought her RWD E46 sport package wagon was "lame" because it was a wagon mommy-mobile. Couldn't have been more wrong.

rode by an E39 wagon the other day. 540. couldn't keep it limp. one of those cars that i point out to the wife and say "you don't know it, but that car is fucking awesome." always met with her rolling her eyes, but whatever... one day she'll get it.

Honestly owning our 540i killed my fetish for them. Very cool, very pretty cars, extremely comfy on the highway.

But realistically you're looking at 11-13mpg in town and not much better than 20 on the highway, don't believe anyone that tells you different. The turning circle in parking lots is shockingly bad, and the maintenance it demands is brutal, even by my standards. It was a fun couple of years, but never again.
