^^ are you freaking serious?? what a waste of tax payers money

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - WRXtranceformed - 04-06-2010

Makes me feel good about sending off that big ass payment to the government yesterday. Believe me, our government is definitely not composed of the best and brightest, just the richest and most well-connected. If you don't believe that then you need to start learning about your country.

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - CaptainHenreh - 04-06-2010

Clearly he's trying to use flowerly language to ask "Admiral, Have you considered the environmental impact of bringing a shitload of marines to Guam?" He's just not very eloquent.

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - ScottyB - 04-06-2010

considering the awesome political figures that we've produced from that district  i still can't figure out if he's serious or not, because it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was serious.

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - BLINGMW - 04-06-2010

while we're on the topic of our glorious government and your tax dollars being put to good use, did you guys see this video? It's too long, but the 18min version is worth a watch:

http://collateralmurder.com/

Cliffs notes in order of unacceptableness:

1) Military misidentifies cameras as AKs (worse than the press!)
2) Annihilates everyone without provocation
3) Attacks the ambulance, finishes off the survivors
4) Our government covers it up for 3 years

I saw this yesterday, and I've been hearing alot of this same stuff, and I have this to say:

#1: Looking through the Apache gunsight, I'm not sure I could tell the difference between the cameras and weapons. There is a long tube (maybe a tripod?) that def. looks like an RPG. And the one guy looking down the street?
#2: What did you want them to do? It's a goddamn warzone. Wait around until they were fired upon? They asked for permission to fire, permission was granted. It's the United States Army not fucking Starfleet. There's no "Do not fire unless fired upon" rule of war. Besides, there were troops on the ground close by, it's the Apache gunners job to locate and eliminate potential threats BEFORE they can endanger American lives.
#3: Ambulance? You mean shitty old van. The Geneva Convention specifically states that hospitals, ambulances, etc. ÔÇ£shall bear a red cross on a white groundÔÇØ, which said shitty old van clearly did not.
#4: This is probably the only valid complaint. Reuters has been known to embed journalists with insurgents, so even if a member of the press died here, it doesn't mean that enemy soldiers didn't. But should the People be privy to everything that the army ever does? (You're aware that this incident was investigated already, right?)

Is it unfortunate? You better believe it. But the reality is that the press employees here were in a war zone, actively patrolled by American troops, and didn't notify said troops they were going to be in the area. Life sucks, but Iraq circa 2007 was a dangerous place. (Still is.) Yeah, you have to go where the story is, but what if a F4 Phantom had taken out the AA gun that Jane Fonda had been posing on? The people who died knew the risks, and it's unfortunate this happened, but I'm not sure I understand the outrage. Too easy to play monday morning quarterback on this one...

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - BLINGMW - 04-06-2010

On 2&3, ok, I don't know the rules of war, maybe this is fine. The "ambulance" isn't marked, but at that point, no-one has weapons that they can see, and they open up on them. Is driving up to a wounded guy and picking him up a crime?

But 1. I couldn't identify them properly either. That's kind of the point. Our guys identified what they saw as a group of people carrying RPGs and AKs. They couldn't see that at all. And this isn't some rare thing, our "smart" crap takes out innocents all the time. Doesn't that point out some sort of fatal flaw in our operations? And we're moving to more UAVs with cameras only, robots, and bombs via nintendo controller? While it's nice that it keeps our troops out of harm's way, if that harm is just spread to innocent civilians, then I don't really consider that success. It just makes it easier for us to wage war.

And 4. Isn't government cover up bad? Of course, it's not like this is the first time.... :!:

Those two are really all I need to rightfully get pissed about this.

That isn't really true.

That doesn't look like camera equipment to me.

Here's what the troops on the ground found when they arrived:

And here's what an RPG can do to an Apache: (nevermind what it can do to troops on the ground)

Centcom's Findings on this Incident Wrote:Only after extensive review of the AWT's gun-camera video and with knowledge of the two missing media personnel, is it reasonable to deduce that two of the individuals intermixed among the insurgents located in the engagement area may have been reporters. There was neither reason nor probability to assume that neutral media personnel were embedded with enemy forces. It is worth noting the fact that insurgent groups often video and photograph friendly activity and insurgent attacks against friendly forces for use in training videos for use as propaganda to exploit or highlight their capabilities. The aircrews erroneously identified the cameras as weapons due to presentation (slung over shoulder with the body of the object resting at the back, rear of torso) and association (personnel colocated with other having RPGs and AK-47s).
(emphasis from source)

As far as the coverup goes, I still haven't seen any evidence of one. There was an investigation into the incident, and the only evidence I've heard of a "cover-up" is that Reuters had trouble getting a hold of this footage through a FOIA request. (Which, knowing what Reuters would do with it, I can't say I blame them.)

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - Kaan - 04-06-2010

i'm sure the troops on the ground were thankful the appache pilot pulled the trigger... mistake or not... and i think thats all that matters.

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - Evan - 04-06-2010

Crouching behind a building while pointing a long cylindrical shaped object at a helicopter in a warzone next to insurgents is going to get your ass shot up.
And if you were too stupid to realize that then you should be nominated for a Darwin Award.

any death is sad, especially in war.

but this hyperventilating over eeeviill bloodthirst US troops killing innocent civilians and journalists is pure propagandized bullshit with an agenda. not like the 3 minutes of emotion-baiting pictures and text before showing the video wasnt an instant tipoff

Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - BLINGMW - 04-06-2010

well alright alright, thanks for finding more about it. I don't really know wtf is going on over there. I guess I'll go back to my regular scheduled program of hating our government for other reasons.

No secret that I'm not a fan of a lot of what Republicans do these days, but good for them.
