RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - WRXtranceformed - 01-02-2018 Thanks dudes! I was actually looking at both of those RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - WRXtranceformed - 01-03-2018 http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2017/11/10/iphone-x-screen-freezing-in-cold-weather-but-fix-is-coming.html In a support page entry, Apple said that it recommends using the iPhone X in the 32-degree to 95-degree temperature range. The company added that using the device in temperatures outside that range "might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Interestingly, the support page suggests the iPhone X's problem goes beyond just turning the screen off and might actually turn off the entire handset. Apple also said that low temperatures could cause a "temporarily" shorter battery life. "Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures," Apple said on the support page. The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - JustinG - 01-03-2018 I will say my phone has cutoff during a mid 20s football game up in hburg. It was in my uninsulated outer chest pocket on my coat. The next game, similar temps, kept in my actual pants pocket, no issues. RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - .RJ - 01-03-2018 my 6 would shut off if battery was < 50% and I tried to use it outside under freezing. RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Ken - 01-03-2018 Intel Fucked Up Pretty Bad This will be very interesting to see play out. 5% performance decrease and no one will really notice, but 30%? Jesus. Your Netflix may stream a bit choppy somewhat soon. RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - RawrImAMonster - 01-03-2018 (01-03-2018, 10:26 AM)Ken Wrote: Intel Fucked Up Pretty Bad I had heard some rumors about this floating around recently. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. Maybe this is the break AMD needs to become a real competitor again. We won't know anything until more details are released, but the performance decrease is supposed to be especially noticeable for VM hosts, which is kind of a really big deal. The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-03-2018 Damn my computer can barely run as it is. Will windows even roll a patch out for win 7? I never upgraded to 10 for fear my already dead computer wouldn't be able to handle the new os. In other news, if anyone is looking for a way to make some of their outlets smart but not spend $30 per outlet, the hook wifi to rf bridge works surprisingly well. You can get a 5 pack of rf switches for $25. $50 for the hook and it works with Google home and Alexa and more support seems to be coming. People have already found work arounds to get it to work with Samsung smart things but that seems rougher. The app UI isn't the prettiest but the Google home support seems to work fine. Range covers my entire apartment and is supposed to cover a whole house. I would definitely think this qualifies as a security update, which W7 gets through 2020. Probably still a good time to update either way. RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - RawrImAMonster - 01-03-2018 If the flaw is as bad as they are saying, MS will probably even release a patch for Windows XP like they did with WannaCry. Every now and then we have a client who lets us know they are running XP, and it's almost always something like a 911 call center. HOW?????? The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-03-2018 Update the os or the computer. I don't think they do win 10 for free anymore. My fiance is about to get a new computer. A Mac unfortunately but maybe I'll just use that for when I use a computer which is pretty much just job applications and like things that have to be done in word or something Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Jake - 01-03-2018 Windows 10 generally improves performance relative to Win7. It sped up my ancient Dell Latitude quite a bit back when I was rocking that at home. I had the choice of a MacBook Pro or a Windows-based laptop for my new job (seriously, they emailed and asked) and I chose the Mac. Will be nice to have one of each kicking around since I have a Lenovo for personal use. The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-03-2018 Yea she might get a desktop to save some money but I feel like you guys have been saying the beach Mac books aren't worth the price compared to old ones. Also, I don't know how to Apple...but to be fair, I don't know how to win 10 either with all the tiles and bullshit but I think I can turn that off. Doubtful but Maybe they'll let me Upgrade to win 10 with this patch Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - WRXtranceformed - 01-03-2018 (01-02-2018, 12:47 PM)WRXtranceformed Wrote: Any recommendations for a good wireless keyboard / mouse combo? My logitechs are finally giving up the ghost I think. Here's what I ended up with: Keyboard: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007PJ4PN2/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=IAG4TMJA6PICZ&colid=2ZWW5EDCUMJJA&psc=0 Mouse: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Anywhere-Wireless-Cross-Computer-Control/dp/B071VK5KXN/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 If the mouse ends up not being as great for home use I'll just keep using this gaming mouse, but that should be really nice for when I travel. I actually looked hard at the solar keyboard Chris linked and another version, but I don't think I would get enough light in my office here to keep it charged (those work much better in office enviros with constant fluorescent lighting apparently) RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - RawrImAMonster - 01-04-2018 There's more information out on the CPU security flaws today. Meltdown is the flaw that affects Intel CPU's back into the mid 90's. This one is the one that is going to be patched shortly and will affect performance of Intel CPU's. Apparently this will mostly only affect servers with high amounts of input/output (database servers, VM hosts, etc). Personal computers and gaming shouldn't be affected much. Spectre is the other flaw that affects all modern CPU's. This one is harder to exploit, but is also much harder to mitigate. AMD again comes out on top here with it only being vulnerable to a less severe version of it. The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-05-2018 So I thought I found a way to get free win 10. The offer (for people who use the accessibility functions) ended on the 31st but it still let me download the installer which is supposedly what you need to have the license and then you can install whenever. I did that and haven't really touched my computer since but I got a call today from a computer saying it was an emergency and it windows license expired and your computer won't work anymore. Sounds like a scam and I have no plan to call the number they gave me but still kinda crazy with timing. When I get time, I'll turn the computer back on and hope it works lol Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - .RJ - 01-05-2018 I got one of those calls today, too. RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - JustinG - 01-09-2018 A Wifi Question.... Fios 100/100. Purchased the VZ Quantum router vs paying their retarded rental fee. ($100 up front vs $10 a month for atleast the 2yr contract.) Router handles the wifi, and the LAN ports feed the hardwire connections in the house. LAN connection produces appropriate speed at all hardwire points in the house. WIFI is garbage. Have 27 devices connected to my 2.4 channel. Between Personal/Work Cells, Personal/Work PCs, Tablets/Ipads, Streaming devices, gaming systems, home automation.... My 5 channel has always been garbage and spotty. Issues started to show themselves with the recent addition of the last 4-5 devices (2 Home minis, Smart TV, Vizio Soundbar, and Nintendo Switch) No amount of reboots, resets, channel changes etc has helped. My signal strength and channel choice are set to the best rated channel using the wifi analyzer on my phone, but my DL speed fluctuates between .2 Mbps and 3 Mbps regardless of device. Sometimes it'll spike up to 15 and then near immediately crash back down mid test. The router UI doesn't allow me the ability to prioritize devices. My initial thoughts are router is shitty and cant handle the # of devices, but prior to buying a new one or giving the google wifi a try, I was curious if there were any additional troubleshooting steps someone would like to enlighten me on. RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Apoc - 01-09-2018 Do you still have a wireless router? If so, wire that to VZ router as wireless access point and disable the wireless on the VZ. If the speed is good, you know it's shitty wireless from the VZ. Google can help you with settings on the two devices, but DHCP will still be owned by the VZ router since there are wired devices plugged into it.
