Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 06-26-2017 Love my Acer R13, which is a 13inch convertible for about $350 if you catch it on sale. Aluminum body, really nice screen, touchscreen, flips into tablet mode. Build quality is great. Has USB-C charging and data, USB 3.0, expandable memory using MicroSD, HDMI out. Since you want smaller, you could do the Samsung PLUS which is a 12in for $400ish, or for $550 the PRO. If you want a 10-11in, get an Acer R11 or Asus C100 which are both sub $300. Things that I think would be a must have, expandable storage via MicroSD and USB-C Charging/data. I am a huge fan of USB-C charging/data port, mostly cause my Pixel Charger can top off the laptop as well, and you would be in the same boat with your S8. Although it is not as fast, you can still work and it'll charge enough to keep you going while making it 1 less charger to lug around. A couple of suggestions from Android Central, https://www.androidcentral.com/best-chromebook Regardless of what you go with make sure it is on the list for Android App support as that is likely to last you longer. https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/ch ... droid-apps Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 06-27-2017 That Chromebook Plus looks like a pretty nice machine, and for daily use 13" is nice. FWIW if you want a little smaller and end up in 11.X", the R11 is fine, but I really like the CTL NL61T. Similar specs and price, but the quad core 3160 instead of dual core 3150, and is designed for abuse. http://ctl.net/ctl-nl61t-education-chro ... ouchscreen I bought one for my son late last year and have recently replaced my daily use windows field laptop with another one I liked it so much. It also just gained Android app support. The only things that I don't love about the chrome OS is printing and scanning. Everything else it does better than windows and as well as Mac. It does so much better managing resources and OS updates are fast and never in your face. Didn't realize this until Casey started printing/scanning more docs since she started selling these cleaning products. Remedy was to purchase a Google Cloud/Air Print compatible printer for $100. Can scan directly to Google Drive direct from printer or from the Chromebook. Also syncs up with Amazon's Dash services, so it automatically places an order for Ink when the Ink gets to a certain percentage. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013I2XBZW?ref=emc_b_5_t EDIT: looks like the price increased on that printer... Skynet is in full control at the Gallamore house. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 06-27-2017 Good to know, I didn't know the scanning was better with newer printers. Mine is cloud capable for printing but doesn't seem to be for scanning AFAIK. Right now scanning to USB then sticking it in the laptop is my remedy (sneakernet). Still better than launching the Samsung scanner bloatware on windows, finding where they'd moved all the buttons to today, and then rolling a die to see if it would find the printer. Amazing that 20 years ago scanning and printing was easier and more reliable. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - CaptainHenreh - 06-27-2017 Hey maybe y'all can help me find something. Looking for a battery/charger combo that will take 12vdc input and charge/maintain a connected (12vdc output) battery. I'm building a thing. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - CaptainHenreh - 06-27-2017 JustinG Wrote:https://www.amazon.com/HitLights-Rechargeable-Lithium-Battery-Strip/dp/B007RQW5WGThat's close, but it's only got a single port. Looks like you either plug it into the thing you need to power OR plug it in to charge. I need both. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 06-27-2017 Ahh gotcha so need an input that passes through when plugged in, but a battery back so you can work unplugged. Any requirements for output Amps? Got it, I will let ya know if I run across anything. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - CaptainHenreh - 06-27-2017 JustinG Wrote:Ahh gotcha so need an input that passes through when plugged in, but a battery back so you can work unplugged. Correct. Passes/charges when plugged in, battery when unplugged. I am even totally willing to do that on a switch, and I don't mind a lead acid battery either. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 06-27-2017 Just making sure I'm reading this right, it's a 12VDC input, and 12VDC output? So like... you need a copper wire. Maybe two. :dunno: I think it would be helpful to know what the actual input thing is, even if you don't want to tell us the output thing. A solar charge controller comes to mind because while a solar panel output might be normally 12VDC, it's really up to 18V+. And the battery it charges really wants like ~13.5V, so it does that and monitors battery voltage until it's full (via temperature, voltage around 12.8V, or both). Or maybe you just need a voltage regulator? How efficient do you want/need it to be? My windows machine was an Asus Transformer, screen could come off the keyboard. I thought it'd be a nice way to show pictures to clients. I never once bothered to take the screen off when doing that. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 06-28-2017 Apoc Wrote:I feel like I'd want one with tablet mode. Someone convince me one way or the other. All of the newer Chromebooks that are worth a damn, minus a Dell Chromebook 13, are convertibles. I like tent mode for watching movies or playing games with the kid. Completely flat/tablet for browsing on the couch. Plus chrome is easy to navigate using the touchscreen. Even when I have it in laptop mode I use the touchscreen. I'd say 75% of the time I am in Tablet mode unless I am doing something typing intensive. Without just pouring electrons into it until it explodes. It's not providing the power, it's the maintenance. I'm basically building a boombox, and I want it to run on a rechargeable battery or, when a DC power supply is plugged into the wall, I want it to run off of that instead of the battery and I want the battery to charge until it is full. It would likely become my plane movie machine, which are more functional when you aren't in clamshell mode. Email and this damn website are the things I'd want a keyboard for. This phone business is getting old. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - .RJ - 06-28-2017 I got tired of my wife complaining about her piece of shit kindle. I bought a kindle fire for her as a replacement for her old kindle, which was also a piece of shit hardware. The fire has always been buggy and never worked quite as you expect. I just bought an iPad Mini 4 instead. This is her using her kindle -
Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 06-28-2017 Kindle are a completely different product to tablets, IMO. The Fires are a bottom line tablet - I wouldn't recommend it to anyone over 10. The wife has a Samsung tablet, which she uses for internet and a kindle she uses for proper reading in bed at night. Looking at a few chromebooks online, I think I might actually need to touch them in person. One of the major downsides of living in the city is we don't have big box stores when I can go to feel things up. I think your best bets would be Best Buy, Staples, Office Max, if those are anywhere near you. Cant you just walk into an Amazon warehouse and snag a couple to play around with ![]() I will say there was a bit of a learning curve moving from Windows to Chrome, mostly with the track pad. Also, I didn't realize it until after the fact, but my R13 lacks a Delete button, which is manageable as I only miss it when typing. Not sure if this is specific to the R13 or across the board on chromebooks. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 06-29-2017 I fondled a couple models on a quick food run around here. The Samsungs seem really well made, but I'm not convinced on a 12" screen. The aspect ratios on the 11's is too wide and short; likely to accommodate a keyboard. My tablet is 8.4 and it's perfect for planes, but I wonder if I'd rather something bigger since I'd be using it a lot more at home. 12" just might be the sweet spot. I'm actually leaning towards the ASUS C302. Similar to the Samsung Pro, but seems like the keyboard is better, it has twice the storage, and it's cheaper. Newegg, where I have eggpoints from my recent TV purchase, has them open box for $400. I think all chromebook keyboards have an identical configuration... with no delete. My work MacBook doesn't have one and it's effin annoying.
