I don't know if I would ever touch an Acer. Just always heard horrible things about them.

Early reviews of the samsung series 3 are really promising -

I've decided thats what I want to buy, but this house shit, collarbone de/reconstruction bills and some other things have put a big pinch on my budget for the moment. Maybe I'll buy myself an xmas present.

real nice laptop for $400

(ultrabooks are still going to be faster/better though)

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - .RJ - 12-07-2011

fuck fuck fuck.... $$ is tight right now Sad

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - .RJ - 12-07-2011

Is thing going to be a good deal faster than my POS Dell with the Atom processor?

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - Evan - 12-07-2011

yes much much faster. its a 2nd gen i3

ultrabook would still be nicer, but would be at least twice the price.

Fuck fuck fuck.

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - .RJ - 12-07-2011

I'm going to hold out for the 12.5" for a little more $$... when I have some $$ to spend.

oh god. night and day faster. although, an ssd would make even more of a difference. my next machine will definitely have an ssd.

i'm gonna agree though, that screen is a touch too small.

I can't wait for discs to go away permanently.

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - Mike - 12-08-2011

like... an ssd?

disk, btw.

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - Evan - 12-08-2011

i think he meant cd, dvd, bluray etc?

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - Apoc - 12-08-2011

No, Mike's right. It should be disk... as in I can't wait for the antiquated technology of spinning hard drives to die. I really, really like the no moving parts aspect of my tablet but it has certain obvious deficiencies.

Although I'd also love for all optical discs to go away too. Especially video games.

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - Mike - 12-08-2011

you don't consider an ssd to be a "disk," right? they're still ok? i sure as hell don't want fixed storage.

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - Apoc - 12-08-2011

Correct. It's the mechanical aspect I disagree with.

Flash good.

Kinda hate to even link a gateway product, but anyway, 15" core i3 for 400$ <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1586672&sku=G180-156404">http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1586672&sku=G180-156404</a><!-- m -->

So this thread hasn't been updated in a couple of years and I'm in the market for a new laptop. I'll be starting grad school next month so it'll need to do things that school laptops do, but I'd also like something relatively portable for travel. Do you guys see anything wrong with this:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/satellite-14-touch-screen-laptop-6gb-memory-750gb-hard-drive/1724699.p?id=1219061407420&skuId=1724699&st=categoryid$pcmcat247400050000&cp=1&lp=41">http://www.bestbuy.com/site/satellite-1 ... cp=1&lp=41</a><!-- m -->

or do you all have any other suggestions?

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - V1GiLaNtE - 04-15-2014

Great time to start this back up Maeng.. I'm looking for something which can handle all the GoPro footage that I've been filming from our adventures and what not. Seems like a older Macbook Pro would do the trick but I'd like to see if there are more budget friendly platforms.. Or just I just build a damn desktop..?

picked up a <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/latitude-e7440-ultrabook/pd">http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/latit ... trabook/pd</a><!-- m -->
for work, maybe not the most cost effective machine if you're paying out of pocket, but got it with an i7, 16gb of ram and the ssd. it cooks right along and has been able to handle everhthing i've thrown at it. (like email and browsing forums...you know, real intensive stuff.)

if i have one recommendation, spring for an ssd. even if it's a small one like 128 or something, the performance is great. you can always add a 3tb spindle usb drive if you need more storage/backup.

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - Evan - 04-15-2014

it should be adequate. screen resolution is low (go for at least 1080p) and has no SSD would be my biggest complaints. CPU and ram are real good however.
FWIW, I had a toshiba years ago and didnt like it. A slight improvement over a Dell, but not much. Our last 2 laptops have been Lenovo and Ive been really impressed. Even the bargain basement model I bought Anne has great build quality and fantastic keyboard.

I would recommend a Yoga 2 for about that same price, or a Yoga 2 Pro for a little more.
