Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - Apoc - 12-28-2013

My thoughts on XB1 after the first couple days.

Quote:What follows is a fanboi review of the XBox One after a couple days with the product. I’ve always been a fan of the product, I never had problems with my XBox 360, and I never really considered bailing on the One to a PS4 after all the pre-release drama. I looked forward to the One’s release for a month before it came out and then waited another month after release to get one for Christmas. It probably goes without saying that you should take all this fanboism with a grain of salt.

The Good

>>Set up was super simple. Physically, there were just a few things to plug in and place. The Kinect did it’s own testing of the room and guided on placement, to ensure the camera and sound were optimized. There were a couple updates to download and apply, but they went smoothly.
>>The electronics integration is pretty amazing. The XB1 serves as an entertainment hub in that it controls all the other devices and is the brain of the operation. I didn’t realize devices could be controlled through HDMI – they can. Now the XB1 turns on the TV, DirecTV receiver and audio receiver without any real help. All of this was done with a single cable I already had in place, so no fancy (re)wiring. We really have no need for a universal remote now.
>>Streaming is a snap. It’s very easy to stream video from the internet and locally to the XB1 from computers and cell phones on the network. There’s native support in all the devices we own, so it’s as simple as clicking a button or right-clicking a file and choosing to play on the XBox. This makes Chromecast and the 25′ HDMI cable I ran around the outside of the room to my laptop obsolete.
>>Voice control is the future. Navigating the XBox with your voice is somewhat gimmicky, but being able to turn on the TV, navigate to a specific channel, pause the DVR, and mute the audio receiver hands free is pretty awesome. Did I mention we no longer have a need for our universal remote? “XBox On [pause] Watch TV” and BAM we’re watching television without touch anything.
>>We finally have a Blu-ray player. I was holding out until this generation game console because I didn’t want another duplicative box sitting around after it did.

The Bad

>>There is no DVR integration, other than pausing and seeking. We can view the DTV guide, but can’t set anything to record or navigate our list of recorded shows. This means we still have a DTV controller for recording and playing recorded programs. Hopefully the voice and DTV integration progresses to the point of making 100% voice control a viable option.
>>The avatar app is wickedly unstable; crashing about a dozen times before completing what we wanted.
>>The Kinect is always on. There’s a chance some lonely guy at Microsoft is listening to and watching everything that goes on in our living room. There seems to be somewhat of a gender gap in the concerns over privacy about this one.
>>The XB1 UI is largely based on Windows 8′s Metro. People aren’t a fan of it and I’m inclined to agree. I understand MS is trying to make something that works well with touch and is also usable on non-touch devices, but they’re still missing the mark. I’d like them to make it easier to find out which friends are online.
>>You need the disc to play the game and there’s only one slot. I think it’ll be annoying to have to constantly swap discs to watch a movie and play video games. I can avoid this by buying downloaded versions of the games, but then I can’t sell my used games. They’re the same price – am I willing to give up any used sale for not having to swap discs? Not sure. They should have made it so you could authorize a disc to your XBox serial, play as much as you want without the disc, and block anyone else using it until it was unauthorized. Having a second disc slot isn’t practical, so this would be the best way minimize disc swapping and still preserve resale. Given MS didn’t want to allow resale at all, I doubt this will ever happen.

The Verdict

You’ll notice there isn’t really any mention of video games in this. It plays games perfectly well and the graphics are marginally better, but the value comes in what it does besides play video games. If people are looking for a pure next gen gaming box, I can see how they’d go for the cheaper PS4. I buy two games a year, at most, so I find much more value in the entertainment hub functionality. In just a few days it’s become a seamlessly integrated component of our living room. Melissa bought a (downloaded) Kinect game on day one, so the appeal is certainly more broad than a hardcore gamer’s plaything. Nice job Microsoft. I’m still firmly a fanboi.

I'm glad you had a good experience with integrating your XB1 into your home multimedia system however I had the exact opposite experience. There was some novelty of course after everything was successfully paired but I ended up disconnecting / unpairing all of my technology from my XB1 for these reasons:
1) The DVR function on the DTV genie mini would not work properly when it was routed through the XB1. That's obviously a huge concern.
2) The picture quality of my TV while watching satellite was significantly worse when it was run through my XB1, no matter how I "tuned" the picture. The issue was fixed immediately after directly routing the mini into my TV. In addition because my new TV has the ability to run separate custom video profiles for different inputs (satellite, gaming systems, etc.) I set up optimized profiles for each and just run them off of two separate inputs.
3) My TV has a smart app system that not only has all of the same apps as the XB1 but also has many additional ones that are not available on the XB1. Also the quality of the picture is vastly superior when watching Skyfall on the TV Amazon Prime app vs. the XB1 Amazon Prime app even on the same video profile. I have no idea why this is but it is a night and day difference.
4) Aside from me also being kind of uncomfortable with the XB1 constantly watching and listening to me (and it freaking out my wife a little), the voice recognition still just isn't quite there for me yet. It is not turning off when I am right next to it and asking it to turn off, etc. The "smart" TV menu for directv also sucks through the XB1.
5) My old Xbox didn't exactly have the best track record for longevity, so regardless of how much more R&D went into this one I think only time will tell whether these things hold up when they are turned on constantly through long gaming sessions / any time I watch TV / movies etc. I would rather let some other people play the odds and I will only turn this thing on when I am gaming.

Aside from that, I am definitely with Mike on this one (from your FB post) that I would have preferred better software available at release. I didn't buy this thing looking for a new multimedia "amp" that is voice activated...I bought it to play cutting edge games with hardware that can run them. So now I am stuck yawning through Ghosts multiplayer because I already beat Ryse and BF4 and returned them both...and there are no other games out there that are really going to entertain me until late spring? Whack.... I can't say I am disappointed yet but I would not have been sad if I went with the PS4 to be honest.

Aren't the Genie minis wireless? I'm guessing there are some signal degradation issues and the weak wireless signal falls apart when being routed through the XB1. I bet the poor signal on the apps have have to do with wireless too. It sounds like the technology isn't there yet for your application.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm running everything wired - DirecTV and XB1. The phones are laptops are obviously wireless; I'm surprised how well they stream, to be honest. There is no appreciable difference in picture quality for anything I do. I think I'd be pissed if I had all the problems you have... I guess I just got lucky.

Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 12-29-2013

Some genie minis can be wireless but mine are the hard wired ones too. Everything is hard wired including the internet connections to the TV, XB1 and genie :/

Nope, that's my experience too. I find it way easier to run everything through the XB1 with no difference whatsoever in quality on any app and/or TV. I would be pissed too though if I ran into all those issues.

Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 12-30-2013

I'm pretty much over Ghosts. Terribly broken spawn points and constant weapon nerfs are the most annoying way to break people into a new game. The maps are complete garbage. I played BO2 over the break with my brother and I forgot how fun that game was. Are there any other games worth playing right now? :/ Not super stoked about having to wait until February or whatever for Titanfall and until March for Beta Destiny

Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - Mike - 12-31-2013

BF4 is fun online.

BF4 shit the bed on me. Won't let me log into online game sessions and in my campaign I reach a certain point and it freezes and goes back to XB1 home screen. Tried uninstalling and re-installing the game, removing my Xbox live account and re-adding it, nothing. Apparently this is across all platforms from what I've read. infuriating.

Not so much for me, I got super bored after giving it 4 solid session attempts. After I beat the single player campaign it got sold back to Gamestop. I guess I'll keep my gaming time filled with Rachael's Wii U until they actually release some games with substance

Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - CaptainHenreh - 01-01-2014

BF4 had some teething problems on PS4 early on, but has been rock solid all month. Can't speak for the campaign, as that isn't what I bought it for, but MP has been greeaaaat.

Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 01-01-2014

Bought back BO2 on the cheap for 360 yesterday and have been playing it with my brother teaching him the ways of the shotgun until something better comes out for the XB1.

Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - Apoc - 01-01-2014

I have a lot of fun in BF4. I used to never pay online unless I was playing with friends - I'm starting to actually enjoy it solo. It still pisses me off when I die, but I don't hate it with a seething passion like I always did dying a lot in CoD. I'm ~75% through the campaign. It's like every other FPS made in the last half dozen years.

Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - Apoc - 02-18-2014

About 1/3 through the CoD campaign... already much better than BF4. Also played some sorta alien killing survival mode tonight with Lee in CoD. It was a shitload of fun.

I downloaded the Titanfall beta, but I haven't played it yet. Has anyone?

Yeah man that was really fun! I am glad you jumped into our game! That was definitely the furthest we have gotten...I am pretty sure we were close to beating it if we could make it past that alley being blocked. We were talking last night about how to beat that part. After we arm the nuke I think if we make a run for that courtyard at the blockage and set up 3 or 4 IMS's it would help to take down the two big Brutes and everything else that followed us in there. My IMS was maxed at that point and it went through it in about 5 seconds. I am also pretty close to getting explosive rounds so that might give us a little more of an edge.

Anyone got a good adventure game to play? I'm tired of twitch games, and have been looking for some kind of slower paced game, preferably with an online component that isn't dead. PC or 360 would be good. Kind of leaning toward PC since I don't want to really sink any more money in my 360

Diablo 3 has an expansion getting ready to come out next month. It should fix a lot of problems the vanilla version has. Even without the expansion, the vanilla version is getting a huge content/fix patch soon as well.

Edit: Anyone have a PS3 they want to sell? I'm looking for a used one.

You guys had better get on that Titanfall beta, it ends tomorrow. It sounds like the game is pretty fucking badass. I'm still tempted to get a Xbox One to play it, but at the very least I'll wait a bit to see if the launch goes smoothly and if the product isn't crippled with bugs like BF4 was at launch.

Hrmm I hadn't kept up with it. I burned out on D3 pretty fast before. I'm not really sure why - short game + auction house?

The auction house is going away and they are adding some more end game stuff. Item drops will be more tailored to the character you're playing now too with the flipside being that most legendaries will bind on account now.

Overall, it should be a pretty big change.

We def need to set up some time to beat that. Last night was my first time playing, so I was kinda lost on the whole upgrade thing. Now that I understand it better and know there are classes, I think I can be a lot more useful. I had some upgrades that I thought were kinda useless - we should definitely align our classes.
