Ha, I wish.

Cruising at 65 on 33E, almost at the Swift Run Gap entrance to Skyline Drive, the car started missing and shaking followed by a loud bang and blue smoke, limped it another few hundred feet to the ranger station and shut it off.

I'm fairly positive the motor is gone due to obvious, audible rod knock. I don't know if it was caused by some oil starvation issue, or a possible BHG, or what. I know a slowly deteriorating head gasket can lead to this down the line; oil was changed roughly 150 miles ago so right now I don't know what to think.

Sad

- DavidL - 04-25-2009

Bummer to hear man Sad Hope things arent as bad as they sound, but keep us updated!

- Nis01 - 04-25-2009

Sorry to see it Goodspeed. Hopefully it won't be as bad as you expect.

- ViPER1313 - 04-25-2009

Sucks man, I got a ride in one of those today too. How was the oil pressure on the motor before you shut it off?

Also, just in case anyone wants to know, a fuel pump in a 1992 Taurus SHO lasts exactly 170709 miles.

- fiveoh2go - 04-25-2009

Wow, sorry to hear man. If I can help with anything, just give me a shout.

- Goodspeed - 04-25-2009

Thanks guys, right now its sitting at BW Subaru while I've been in touch with my insurance and researching the cost of repairs/swaps...its looking prohibitively expensive Sad

No idea where the oil pressure was at as the sending unit is dying/dead and the factory gauge is really erratic when it does work. I've been meaning to install a gauge for a long time (even bought that hyper-JDM Greddy kit) to avoid just this situation...eff.

If its indeed rod knock (which, if you were there to hear it, you'd also agree that it is), the motor is done. I read up on it in the past as it can be an after-effect of BHG...I think mine is relatively minor from vids/descriptions I've seen but its definitely there and no matter what, it warrants a full rebuild or new motor Sad

This just puts me in a weird situation right now b/c I was planning on doing a few things then probably selling it after graduation and moving to a new car, but that being in Dec., the car being (probably) too expensive to fix, just puts everything up in the air.

- ScottyB - 04-25-2009

sorry man...if the knock isn't so bad your engine may not be trashed, might just need new rod bearings and have the crank looked at. if not, aren't 7M's pretty easy to come by these days?

- D_Eclipse9916 - 04-25-2009

Find a cheap 7mgte, throw it in and sell it. Youve been thinking of selling it for a while, let just find a junkyard 7m to throw in.

- Ken - 04-26-2009

This is looking ahead but if you do get it up and running again I may have a friend at home who might be interested.

- Mike - 04-26-2009

sorry to hear. i vote for the "find a cheap junkyard motor and sell it"

- Jake - 04-26-2009

Mike Wrote:sorry to hear. i vote for the "find a cheap junkyard motor and sell it"

I think this is going to be the popular vote... mainly because you were already looking to find a new car anyway. Timing sure sucks though. Sorry Goodspeed... it was a very sad sound when you started that motor back up yesterday.

Good luck getting things figured out Smile

- Jeff - 04-27-2009

Goodspeed. I'm willing to help you out any way I can. If that means getting a motor down here and swapping it I'm down to help. I know a guy who would likely tow it up 81 for gas and lunch. I can't have it sitting around down here but if you can get a motor, get it set up, and we can get it done I'm willing to help you. I really don't think it should be that hard.

Sorry to hear about this...

- Steve85 - 04-27-2009

Sorry to hear Goodspeed, that completely sucks. I feel bad now for joking at the track that it was probably a stone in the tire making a tick-tick sound.

Jeff Wrote:I can help..

I'm sure this goes without saying but....Take Jeff up on this. I have pulled my motor several times on jackstands and it sucks. If you can get on a lift for a couple days it will make your life SOO much better.

- WRXtranceformed - 04-27-2009

Ahhh bro that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that. I know exactly how you feel haha. Hopefully all works out well, I third the junkyard engine swap and sell it before it becomes more of a pit.

- balactm - 04-27-2009

for what it's worth, if you do decide to swap the motor, i'd be more than glad to help.

- Dave - 04-27-2009

pulling the 7M isn't a particularly hard endeavor. I'll give a big 'ol +1 on a junkyard 7M and it'd probably be a weekend job to swap them, especially if you can procure a garage/shelter to do it in. I'd bet you can do it for less than $500.
