It would be for a mustang at least. You have to drop the k-member (front engine support mount). So you can drop the pan, and yes you have to drop the whole pan b/c you have to remove the oil pickup, t hen put it all back together and do an alignment. You don't want to know what it cost to do a rear main seal, a $5 gasket can cost 100x that in labor (engine has to go up or down to get it out).

There's a reason why I have basically a fully equipped garage. All the money I'd pay someone else to fix my crap I can buy tools with.

- HAULN-SS - 06-20-2007

After attempting to get my rear-main to seal twice in my white car, and it still leaking (still not sure wtf was going wrong there) I took it to a local shop, and had the rear main done, and the oil pan gasket..total cost was like 160$

well worth it - as it hasn't leaked since, and was a total PITA to do

Did you pack the seal with grease before you installed it?

I dont recall, doesnt seem like it. It's been a couple years, so I can't remember.

When I did my rear main I just took my finger and lubed the inside of the seal where it met the crank. Doesn't leak so I figure its OK.

- NTIman - 06-21-2007

The grease holds the spring inside the seal when you install it.

This ticked me off. I don't do track days or spend much money at all on myself so it kind of evens itself out.

I am coming up on 70,000 mi and an oil change, tire rotation, fluid check. I will probably take it to Merchant's because I always bring my lunch to work and always fill up at Costco in Manassas.

 Enough to hold a grudge about it for 5 months?

Didja have a bad day or something?

I picked up some 17" Momo Winter rims with Falken Ziex ZE-512 mounted and balanced. They will go on when the weather gets inclement. The deal at discount tire direct was too good to pass up.

are you gonna pay a shop to swap the wheels every time bob ryan says it might snow?

- Maengelito - 10-25-2007

fuck bob ryan. that asshole can stick his golden shovel up his ass.

WTF? That might be the most anger I've heard from you.

Um, that's nice? That still doesn't mean that it's an easy as sin job and you throw away money by paying a shop to do it.

- Evan - 10-26-2007

any reason why you went with the 512s instead of a dedicated winter tire Rob? The 512s are pretty poor in the snow and cold, so if this is a winter tire only something like a hankook icebear may have been a better choice.

- WRXtranceformed - 10-26-2007

Yeah I was going to say, I wouldn't trust my 512s in the snow... they can get a little hairy sometimes even in the rain. I'd take them off, sell them, and pick up some Hankooks like Evan said with the cash. I loved the Hankook winter tires on my old STi, they gripped well in all conditions and the sidewalls were actually reasonably stiff.

back in the day when me and my buddies were in a roller hockey league, bob ryan would say it wasnt gonna rain everytime we had a game. we'd hop in the car with all our gear and head out to the fairfax sportsplex and get ready to play and for about 10 weeks straight, it would be sunny as shit EXCEPT like 10 minutes before we played every week. our season was only like 12 weeks, but we ended up missing so many games we got most of our money back from the league.

Don't blame Bob Ryan. God was punishing you for playing loller hockey.

- Maengelito - 10-27-2007

haha, i wouldnt have minded if bob ryan said it was gonna rain, but every week he said it wouldnt which would get me all pumped to play.

Not sure, perhaps a should of done more research. I was just going for an all-season tire. I am even considering flipping this set, so we will see.
