I know a few people with 2015-2016 cars have had clutches that started slipping even without a tune at 20-30k miles... a tune will hasten this, I think.  Not that it really matters as VW isnt warrantying it anyways.

I wouldn't expect anything different for the '18, it's the same drivetrain and it's a well known issue that the VW stock clutch limits are just outside of the stock tune. The most "cost effective" way to do an APR Plus tune on a manual is to purchase the car new and take it straight to the shop for a tune and clutch upgrade. There are kits designed to work with the dual mass flywheel, and having it all done on a new car saves you about $500 because you don't have to replace it. 

The tune is $1100, NGP charges $1800 to install a Sachs clutch disc rated to 400lb-ft without doing the flywheel, about $2300 with the flywheel. So a total cost of $2800-3200 to tune depending on when (not if) you do the clutch.

Alternatively the DSG costs $1100 more out of the box, but all components of it are warrantied including the clutch discs and it's good for 400lb-ft. The tune is $1100 as well, and the TCU tune is $600, but optional.

Awesome thoughts! New cars are so incredible with the technology. We also keep lane assist off in the Mazda because it also goes crazy with construction patterns causing changes in the road / highways. It does NOT like that. Long road trips on roads not under construction is really the only place it makes sense to use.

Android Auto / Apple Carplay is indeed game changing. My brother was just griping this morning about Carplay though because Apple doesn't let you use Waze. Android does, and it's amazing.

Lauren had the same complaints about Waze, but they she started actually using Apple Maps and the directions are better. I think you can also at least get Waze to play through the car audio by using the app on the phone while it's connected to the car.

Also just to clarify my post above about tunes:

1.) I don't math good, total cost w/clutch ranges $2900-3400 to tune a manual car

2.) The $1100 price for the tune is for the APR PLUS product which is the same tune as the Stage 1, but includes a written powertrain warranty backed by APR for your additional $400 over the $699 the regular Stage 1 tune costs.

You can't use Google Maps either with Carplay. I get it, but it's infuriating. Apple Maps blow.

Hey folks, time to bring the mood back down from Joey's nice things!

I really like this car. Only manual I've driven that 1) Doesn't make my back hurt a lot in stop and go traffic and 2) Doesn't make my knee hurt very much. I chalk this up to the good seats and position that allow me to sit close to the pedal, but have room for my legs to get under the steering wheel. My back pain has been worse than usual lately, but I don't think it's related.

There are lots of amazing things about this car, but I'll share the negatives so we don't forget this car isn't the greatest thing ever made.

1) My Soundaktor (engine sound speaker) already rattles
2) The non "premium" audio speakers are good, but if you turn the bass up from zero, my door panels rattle
3) Lumbar is not very good unless you have Joey's fancy power seats that you have to get the Autobahn package to get
4) When the engine is cold, there's a very noticeable rattle as the clutch makes contact with the flywheel. You can feel it very noticeably in the pedal. It goes away when it's warm for the most part
5) The headunit has settings for things you don't get in the US without VagCom coding. The passenger mirror doesn't event tilt down in reverse without coding. Can't roll the windows down with the fob without coding


Other than that, this car is really really cool, and a great value for the money. Otherwise, I'm not going to write this car into my will or anything. It's a really nice DD, but I equate it to an iPhone. It does what it should and does it well (the best), doesn't allow modification without penalty, lacks a bit of personality, and will be quickly replaced by the new model that is 4% better and everyone will rush to get it, making the current model irrelevant. Don't take it the wrong way, I'm very happy with my purchase, it's just interesting to have this perspective now. This car certainly is the best in the segment for the price point (possibly across all price points).

Edit: Android Auto is cool, but it completely locks you out of your phone. You have to do everything through the headunit, so it's impossible to send a text or use any other app without using voice or unplugging your phone.

You can though.  On my S8 when you unlock the phone you have the option to go back to non-Android Auto mode by a button on the lock screen.  Then you hit the Android Auto button on your head unit when you're ready to go back.  You definitely don't have to unplug it.  I think you can also leave Android Auto mode directly from the head unit and then just jump back in again through it.

Hmm, I'll have to try this. The home button on the Pixel is weird some times since you have to do a gesture to get it appear, so maybe I just need to try harder.

It really depends on the procedure the car needs. On my SHO you had to drop the entire subframe from the front of the car to get the trans out. Including machining the flywheel, performing an alignment after everything is back together, somewhere in the 8 to 16 hour range seems about right if that is the case.

My coworker just had to replace his clutch. APR stage 2 with less than 15k miles on it?

But yeah, the stock clutches can barely hold stock power. Any tune over that will kill the clutch in no time. Same for the Golf R's.

Yeah it's more like $800-1k for parts depending on the kit you choose and the remainder in labor, probably 7-8 hours.

Once you really dig into it you start to realize why people that plan to do mods just buy the DSG.

Oooooooooooh. I might have to hit you up for that. Before I do anything I want to try and get someone at the dealership to look me in the eyes and tell me they won't void any and all future warranty work because I went in and coded my right mirror to tilt down when I shift into reverse. I don't trust them for shit. I have a day off tomorrow so I might swing by and see what they say. 

BTW I dunno if I mentioned it earlier but the global name of the GFG is "Peacock Green." It describes it almost perfectly.

If it's any consolation I haven't had Lindsay or Stohlman dealers turn away my mk6 gti for vag-com codes. I even just had my second IM replaced under warranty at 115k miles with light mods and vag-com tweaks at Stohlman. I've never tuned my gti because I don't want to replace the clutch Confusedadbanana:, so I can't speak for that if you decide to tune.
