The SMGs are genuinely a shitty experience, it's not just 3rd pedal snobbery. If you are driving at normal speeds you still have to lift your foot off the throttle with each gear change to keep it from lurching. The engagement from a stop is really slow and clunky. The only thing it's really good at is slamming up a gear at WOT.

When you get into the E90, DSG vs Manual becomes an honest matter of preference, both are good, but with the E46 the manual is infinitely nicer to drive, especially for passengers who don't like to be excessively jostled.

My mom drive's an SMG M3. It couldn't be *that* bad.

Re: Spend Jake's Money. - SlimKlim - 10-04-2016

It is. I've always been surprised she has no complaints. Didn't she go from an old Merc straight to that thing? A lot of those late-80s-gen Benzes I've driven shift like a mule kick.

Also the SMG pumps aren't particularly reliable and they are a 3100 dollar part. A lot of people just do the swap to manual when they go out since the manual and smg use the same gear box. It ends up being cheaper than replacing the pump if you can do the labor.

 Budgeted for that when she bought the car...what 5-6 years ago? It popped a warning light once and I thought it was all over, but spent the $18 for basically a "complicated" relay and haven't had a problem since. Not saying it's not a problem as Mike D'Amico's Convertible E46 M3 SMG just took a dump so we are converting it to manual.

Why?

Isn't that when the IMS bullshit stopped being a problem?
.

I thought they werent a problem at all with the boxster/cockster cars

The 986 Boxster had that and a few other problems. The 987 generation didn't have the IMS issue but they did have some oil starvation and power steering issues for people running hard on track with r-tires and track suspension. They fixed that in 09. So if you go with a 987 that's been decently maintained there shouldn't be any major issues.

the early 986's had rear main seal issues as well as what they called "D-chunking"...which was the cylinder liners breaking apart in big "D" shaped pieces at the tops of the bores.

its a minority of the cars that suffer from it so its always good to remember that unhappy people get loud on the internets...but the problems do exist and its not cheap to fix.

the only real "safe Porsche" of that era are the Turbos or someone that did the reliability mods to the IMS/RMS on the later cars.

Re: Spend Jake's Money. - .RJ - 10-04-2016

Mmmmmm turbos

Re: Spend Jake's Money. - Jake - 10-05-2016

This all makes the fact that every BMW I like has a subframe or trunk floor that just falls out seem... less disastrous.

everyone know that if you have to pick between your floor ripping out, your engine exploding, or your coolant system disintegrating, you go for floor everytime.

But no less expensive. Repairing or reinforcing subframes for Z3/E46 M3 is quite expensive. I would charge $1500-2k based on what I did to my moms (also did bushings etc).

Seriously, go coxster.

Also, I bailed on the GTO. The thought of driving to Manassas to test drive something that looked like a bloated Cavalier, with the brand stigma of "hold my beer and watch this" killed it for me, especially after I saw a guy in a dark gray on red E46 M3 'vert on 395 as I drove home.
Ya killin me man, ya killin me. Do I need to link some straight pipe LS goodness here? You're only gonna drive it for a year anyway lol

If you really just want another kinda sporty kinda exciting kinda cool 4-door, why not IS300?

1. Black
2. Toyota

Pretty set on what I'm actually buying now. Time to find one.

I feel morally obligated to state this publicly.

Ok, paperwork is out of the way. You do you.

Re: Spend Jake's Money. - Senor_Taylor - 10-05-2016

I still don't understand why you don't want a Toyota. What's not to like? Especially if it's a fast and good looking one.

I feel like he has gone over this more than a dozen times. He doesn't like toyotas, never will (never say never!).

IS300 vs 330i? Luxury over sport, or sport over luxury. Both have a good mix, both lean on one side or the other. Jake chooses one way.

Certainly not in this thread. I've asked three times and he never explained.
