Project CB350 - .RJ - 05-25-2008

Picked up a '71 CB350 this morning - Wont be much of a project at first as its in fantastic shape - so I think I'll ride it for a while Smile

After I ride it for a bit I'd like to turn it into something like this, I've got some ideas.

Looks great!

Ah, the joys of old motorcycle ownership Smile

Going down the parkway, nice spring evening, brrrrrrrrrapapapappppppthhhhhhtttt *stop*

Feels like its running out of fuel in the carbamaphone bowls, I wouldnt be surprised if there was some FOD hanging up the float valves. Might as well order a rebuild kit for the carbs, some ignition points and plugs and give 'er a full tune up Smile

I'll give you $1 if you list all the cars and bikes you've had in your possession in the last 5 years.

- .RJ - 05-26-2008

I think that would crash the server

Sometimes its just best to step back from a job when frustration sets in... the points spec in the first manual I looked at was .012 - .016" or .03 - .04 mm. I didnt really think about it, so I set them to .03 mm and then the bike wouldnt hardly run. I stepped back, ran an errand and came back and thought that the spec was really tight. Grabbed another manual and it should be .012 - .016" or .3 - .4 mm - the first bike had the metric conversion wrong. Set them to .35 mm and its much better that way. Test ride tomorrow Smile

both of those bikes look amazing....makes me want one TO LOOK AT.

my mom used to have a tangerine colored sportster..always liked that color

- Sijray21 - 06-17-2008

great looking bike!

love the color combo

Finally got the bike sorted out. New plugs, coils and points. Hooray spark! Cleaned the carbs out and put new seals/o-rings in it, but the rebuild kit I came with is missing the o-rings for the pilot jets - I reused the originals for now - I cant buy them separately from honda, only the rebuild kit so I guess I'll order two of those. I'd like to replace the air filters and mufflers but they're both very expensive so I'll pass.

So I took it for a ride.... it was sounding so nice, pulled strong to 9,000 rpm - it seemed to hit a wall around 9500 - not sure if the points are floating, or thats just all she's got with the old dirty air filters and stock carbs. But I got about 1/4 mile and the rear tire went flat. Fuck.

I think this bike hates me. I'm torn. I really like the bike - its light, small, comfortable, its got plenty of oontz around town and nothing sounds quite like a flat crank twin. Brrrrrrrapppp! But its really pissed me off  And it would sell for $2k on ebay if I cleaned it up a little more...

oh come on. you're thinking of selling the bike because of a flat tire? the only major problem you've had so far was the bike cutting out on you and you fixed that. if you have the patience to tear apart your cafe racer and put it back together, as well as put up with ownership of a MkIV golf for a couple months, this should practically be a vacation.

Basically. I fucked myself pretty good by not getting the carbs cleaned enough the first time but its just one more reminder that you do it right the first time with OEM honda parts - or you get to do it several more times. Eventually, I will learn.

Of course when I bought it I didnt think it would turn into some sort of project, and I didnt want a project - I was just going to ride it as is... until it died on me on the highway and the ignition coils packed in and quit. Fuck.

- ScottyB - 07-10-2008

yeah but it looks awesome. don't sell it.

^ this made the bike run like crap when it was warm. I could get the orings if I bought new jets (thanks Honda! ) so I did that. Bike ran better, ran it around last weekend so I figured its all sorted and I put it up for sale....

Then i tried to ride it to work today, and I got 1/2 mile up the road and the damn bike dies. So... push it back and I take the CB750 to work instead. I checked the battery voltage when I got home, and it was at ~9V. Not good. Put it on the charger for a few hours and the bike fires right up. So I guess I need to get a new battery.

Fuck this thing. It absolutely hates me.

- .RJ - 09-09-2008

Put the bike up for sale... guy comes and test rides it and it dies. It has gas, and +12V at the battery so I dont know. I decided I'd rather drink beer than fuck with it.

This thing just... hates me.
