In the interest of killing time at work, I thought I'd start this thread haha. So I posted some pictures and stuff in my intro thread, but I thought I'd take it from the top here. When I got my license, my parents bought my brother and I a 1999 Ford Explorer.. we shared it and drove it to school and all. It had quite a few issues and we eventually had to replace the entire rear axle because the differential gears were grinding. When we opened the differential up, the oil was silver (no bueno). So while I was away at school last year, the parents sold the car to a dealer for $1k, which was a really stupid decision because they could have easily gotten 3k-4k if they sold it themselves, but I guess it was kind of a knee jerk decision, something my dad almost never does.
Anyway, that led me to start looking into buying a car because I would need to get around to work and stuff in the summer, and it would be great to bring it back to school and join MM! I would constantly scour autotrader.com, cars.com, craigslist for cars. Initially I was looking at Integras because a friend of mine had one and it was pretty ballin. The real criteria I had were: had to be stick shift, had to look cool, had to go relatively fast, and had to have good gas mileage, and I only wanted to pay $5k tops. After a lot of searching, I narrowed my search down to Integras and Preludes. I then found a 1996 Integra GSR on autotrader for $3900. It had 109k, but looked clean inside and out. As I was shutting down my computer to drive out with my dad to check out the car, the seller emails me saying some other guy put a $500 deposit to hold the car until the next day... so I was pretty bummed at that point. So I went back to craigslist and found the Prelude listed at $5500 up in Fair Lakes (which is about 15 minutes from me). I went to check it out the next day, talked her down to $5k and drove it home.
So... the issues I found when I bought the car: oil leak, check engine light, dying front brakes, yellow headlights.
I got my hands on an OBD2 reader and the ECU tripped 3 codes: running rich, dead O2 sensor, and EGR insufficient flow. I removed the EGR valve and it was caked with carbon, so I scraped and blew all the buildup out with an air compressor. I then ordered a new set of O2 sensors ($80, yikes!) and installed them.

Old vs. New
This got rid of the CEL. Next, I moved onto the oil leak... Here's the VTEC solenoid out of the car and the bad gasket (I split it in half when removing it).

![[Image: 4688360803_2c3ece9deb.jpg]](http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4015/4688360803_2c3ece9deb.jpg)
Next I moved on to more cosmetic mods.. I buffed the yellow oxidation off the headlights, painted my gauge bezels, and replaced my gauge lights with blue LEDs.

Next I moved onto the tunes. The stock front speakers both got blown out by the aftermarket head unit. Also, my friend gave me a pair of Alpine Type-S 6x9's for the back because he thought they were "blown", turns out he wired his speakers with duct tape and they came undone (dumbass). So I ordered a set of Polk DB6501 components for the front which are rated at 100RMS/300 Peak.. and I also ran new speaker wire through the doors which was a complete BITCH... here are pics...

I also had to fabricate the door panels a lot to get the new 4-bolt mounting to work... so the Dremel rocked for that. (no pics sorry)
Next project is to run this amp wiring kit:

To this amp in the trunk:

| Burning a lot of oil |

I'm trying to troubleshoot this in my Prelude (2000, 124k miles)... The H22A is known for burning oil especially when pushed into VTEC.. but not 5 quarts every 3k miles haha. I fixed an oil leak on the VTEC solenoid early on when I bought the car, and since then I don't see any signs of a leak on the ground or on the lower parts of the engine.. From what I read, this could mean the valve seals are going bad and Jake is suggesting it could be the valve cover gasket. I'm planning on painting the valve cover eventually, so I'll probably throw on a new gasket when I do that, but does anyone else have other ideas? I'm really hoping it's not the valve seals because that would mean a full head rebuild.

| MM's 10th Anniversary |

So next April will mark 10 years since MM's inception. We've already casually discussed doing a party, but I was thinking we should do something more on the scale of a banquet. A banquet as big and badass as we can manage.
Banquet
Right now I'd say isn't too early to start formulating ideas so I figured I'd kick things off. The general idea I had was renting out a nice space somewhere in Harrisonburg to have a big dinner and party.
*Slide show on a projector during the event composed of the best pictures from members over the years
*A video put together of the history of MM, what it means to people, and where it's going
*Awards, speeches, commemorative party favors, etc.
Track Day
But I was talking to my gf yesterday and she suggested we do something at the track. Now obviously renting out a place like VIR or SP for a weekend would be cost prohibitive. But maybe we'd be able to rent something out for a Monday in May after school is out? Still expensive but not out of the realm of possibility.
The other possibility is that we could definitely rent the SP kart track for the day, even on a weekend. Or maybe have the banquet on one day and the karting day on another weekend.
Perhaps we could just call 2011 the MMX celebration and do a few very special events for the members rather than blowing our load all on one day. Thoughts?

Okay kids. We've decided to take on the June 2011 Big Apple to Big Easy Rally. Check it out here. http://www.baberally.com/index.esp
It's a four day rally starting in New York City, going through Harrisonburg, Newport, through the Appalachians and into New Orleans on the fourth day. There are very few rules really; the rally must be completed in a street legal and inspected car purchased for $500 or less. Each day the teams will be thrown undisclosed "challenges" and will be given style points based on how they complete them.
MM has decided to participate in the rally this year and use it as a fund-raising opportunity for charity. Every four MMers that opt to participate will be broken up into teams and tasked with purchasing and preparing their own car this upcoming spring. We will set up a budget per team, and donate every penny we raise over to a couple of yet to be determined fundraisers. Right now I'm thinking a 100% charity goal is attainable. For every $1000 we raise to fund the rally, we'll donate $1000 to charity.
This is a thread to get you guys thinking about whether or not you'd like to participate. This is an enormous undertaking for the club. Dare I say one of the biggest things we've ever attempted to pull off. Since we're, you know, buying cars and stuff, the level of commitment needs to be considerably higher than the all too familiar "Bro, I'm totally making it to that autocross" and then losing your conviction as fast as your sobriety when Saturday night rolls around. ;-)
This will be presented more in depth this summer to discuss what charities you guys would like to see benefited, and to collect suggestions. We will also gauge interest in participation. The third meeting of the semester will be the deadline for participation. I know its early, but we need to start fund-raising this fall so that we can purchase cars by the middle of the spring semester.
All in all, this is going to be a completely biblical event. An actual road rally, good for us, good for charity, full of old crappy car and good times. Get Pumped!

I have noticed some MMers have taken interest in some more Northern Virginia local autocrosses while they are on summer break, and those that have graduated and are moving up to NOVA. I know Jake, Mike D, and Mike Price have made it out to one or two, and Goodspeed, Kyle Cookmeyer, Dean Hickerson, and I are members. Membership for an entire year (from whne you pay), is $35, but allows you to only pay $25 for each event. This includes 6-8 runs depending on turnout (we typically do 7-8).
They have done 8-9 events so far and there are another 7 autox, 2 more test and tunes, and a road rally left just this year, so plenty of action. I enjoy this club and they run a different pax, based on weight/hp/tire for their "drivers championship", they also have a "small bore" championship. I am competing for the drivers and of course try my hardest to make every event. (they do allow you to drop 6 of the worst/missed events for points).
They run at typically three lots: Hylton High School in Woodbridge, Bowie, MD, and James Woods High School in Winchester VA. This weekend is Winchester, VA. Dean, Kyle, and I will be 100% there this weekend so join us! PS-They typically get preliminary results up within that night or the next morning, no waiting!
